I was hoping one of the stories would be "Seed Stock".  I was a teen when I first read it, not realizing that it was not a "chapter" of a book, but instead was a "stand alone" short story.  I've never felt that much emotional investment in a story before or since, and I felt so lost and let down when there was no continuance.  Yet the brevity and mystery of the story added to its haunting effect on me.  I still get a yearning to reread the story periodically these many, many years later.  It's as if in a deep part of myself, I know that a similar drama happens somewhere in the universe over and over by civilizations that have stepped out beyond their home planets to face uncertain fates.
