Jack: 'I'd sell my soul for a glass of beer'
Hotel: 'SOLD'

This movie confuses a LOT of people to the point there are many theories. My own theory was that the hotel eats souls and incorporates them into it's history. I never noticed until your reaction that the moment Nicholson becomes possessed is right after he says "id sell my soul for a glass of beer"...then he sees his first ghost, the bartender.

When Kubrick follows Jack's ax swings has got to be in the top five greatest cinematic shots

The hotel in the exterior shots is the Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood in Oregon.

This is one of those films where the more time you spend with it, analyzing it, re-watching for details, you start to appreciate more and more. The sound design, symbolism, etc. There's even scenes where Danny is riding his bike where if you watch close you notice the inside floor plan of the hotel doesn't make sense. Its all so subtle and unsettling.

Please, please watch Doctor Sleep. The movie of the shining is very different from the book, but in Doctor Sleep you get the feeling that Jack also had the „Shine“ and that’s why he coped with alcohol before he was clean for a short time, and was vulnerable to the spirits of the hotel in this movie. It’s really a great sequel.

It's always a treat to watch someone unfamiliar with this movie approach it so flippantly (no disrespect intended), and then get the absolute holy shit scared out of them.

Fun behind the scenes fact. Nicholson was a former fire fighter and keep going through the door with the axe to fast so they had to build reinforced prop doors to get the shot Kubrick wanted.

49:30 Remember, he has always been the caretaker.

Tony isn't his "imaginary friend". He's a familiar spirit who tells him things. Danny is clairvoyant.

Jack was reincarnated. That’s why he felt a moment of Deja vu. As if had been there before he mentioned earlier in the film. He was always the caretaker according to Delbert Grady.

The line Heeres Johnny is an adlib from jack Nicholson was a quote from the tonight show starring Johnny Carson. Every episode started, "and now Heeres Johnny ". 😂

It's so sweet how you get so mad when someone is mean to a kid, even though it's just a movie.

@Pamtroy 5 months ago

Yes, it's legit haunted. That moment we hear the lock click we know it.

What a calming presence. I enjoy watching a movie with someone reacting to it :D

Also, I love the trivia that Nicholson actually was a firefighter, so the original doors when he took the axe to them just SHATTERED and they had to make stronger ones. 😂

6:00 never noticed this... That finger puppet saw the future. He told the kid that his dad was about to call his mom about getting the job. Next scene was his dad calling his mom about the job.

Jack & Mr. Holleran also were in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” which won 5 Academy Awards!

This is one heck of a movie to dissect. The film prioritizes deep, often ambiguous symbolism over a straightforward plot. While the film tells a story of a family haunted in a hotel, it is heavily laden with visual metaphors, repeating patterns, and clues. It's a deep dive, dude.

Hi Gaz. The most popular reason for Jack being in the picture from 1921 is that the hotel absorbed his soul, shall we say, and as such he has always, in some ways, been a part of the hotel. For the film Kubrick said the photo showed Jack as someone, an earlier official from the hotel, reincarnated who was drawn back.
