Land is a favourite here... even though he didnt stay in Texas long he still has that big open sound associated with players from the state,, Fathead Newman, Booker Ervin etc.... You Get More Bounce is an absolute gem that gets overlooked... another session well worth finding is Roy Ayers Virgo Vibes where Land plays on one half, Joe Henderson is on the other half so you cant go wrong.... not sure if you're into big band but Land is on a few Gerald Wilson albums that are very solid and usually cheap... great artist feature from you and it's nice to hear a fresh voice talking about jazz who is actually into the music.... cheers
I buy anything with Harold Land on too - his involvement is usually a pretty good sign of quality (much like Buster Williams or Shelly Manne). It can be hard to find originals of his records in the UK, though I did get a first press of the excellent Choma last week (another Bobby Hutcherson collaboration!)
Have been enjoying your videos after seeing Mike mention your channel on the discord; I like your approach - you obviously know a lot about the stuff you like, but it's still laid back and relatable.
As for your comment on "Andrew Hille" on the Conflict record, it is indeed the famous Andrew Hill - on what was one of his earliest recorded sessions.
I dig Harold Land too and one rec I would have for you if you haven't heard it is the "Topology" album he made in Japan with the pianist Makoto Terashita - it absolutely smokes!
Excellent overview of Harold Land. I agree, he is not discussed as often as his music warrants. I have most of the records you shared , but I need to get The Peace Maker- what a line up and Joe Sample makes it intriguing. The original of that used to be uniformly cheap but has been creeping up as of late. Thanks for the video. Mario from Costa Rica
Hi Jeff, It’s 5:50 am here in the Malaysia… Let me say it’s refreshing to see your video (comparatively…. ) Looking forward to your label series, artist contents etc. We do get jazz vinyl here but limited choices…just picked up Miles Davis “Bags & Grooves” ( am a student of jazz hhe..) tq and take care Azmi
Hi Jeff, I do have a soft spot for Harold Land as well. One album I haven't seen mentioned—and which I suspect you would enjoy—is Topology by Terashita Makoto & Harold Land.
