Lachish was the second most important city in the Kingdom of Judah, surpassed only by the capital, Jerusalem.

1. Ostracon: A piece of pottery (shard of a vase) used in antiquity as writing material for notes, letters, or drafts.
2. Tel: An artificial hill formed by successive layers of human occupation over the centuries. Each layer represents a city built upon the ruins of the previous one.
3. Matzevah: An upright stone or stele, used in religious rituals. It could be a memorial, an altar, or an object of worship, both in the context of the God of Israel (as Jacob did) and in pagan cults.
4. Iconoclasm: The practice of destroying religious images or monuments, usually for religious or political reasons. The reforms of Hezekiah and Josiah were iconoclastic movements.
5. Adobe: A type of brick made of clay, sand, and organic material (such as straw), dried in the sun. It was a common building material in the ancient Middle East.
