Meet One of the First Saints of Pope Leo XIV - Pier Giorgio Frassati

EWTN

Join EWTN’s Colm Flynn as he travels across Italy with a group of young men from the United States on a life-changing pilgrimage in honor of soon-to-be saint, Pier Giorgio Frassati.

Starting in Turin, the city where Frassati was born and raised, the pilgrims visit the places he prayed, served the poor, and lived out his deep Catholic faith — all while coming to understand how his joy, charity, and love for God continue to inspire young people today.

Led by Fr. Vincent Berhnard, O.P., the journey takes them to breathtaking locations like the Sanctuary of Oropa, where they climb the same mountain Frassati once hiked; Pollone, where they explore his family’s summer home; and Rome, where they pray at his tomb and conclude their pilgrimage with Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica.

Along the way, the pilgrims share how the experience is challenging them physically, inspiring them spiritually, and giving them a deeper sense of purpose — following Frassati’s motto to “live to the fullest” and “verso l’alto” (“to the heights”).

📍 Locations visited:

Turin – Birthplace of Pier Giorgio Frassati

Sanctuary of Oropa – Mountain pilgrimage

Pollone – Frassati family summer home

Rome – Tomb of Pier Giorgio & St. Peter’s Basilica

In 1975, I was seven years old. My brother and some friends went to Rome for the Holy Year. I wanted to go, but my parents thought I was too young. The parish had recruited a few teenagers to watch over the younger ones. They were active in a youth movement. One of them, only 19, wasn't religious at all. On the contrary, for him, it was a fun trip—secretly drinking wine, courting Italian girls, and smoking a cigarette on the monastery roof at night. As a seven-year-old, I was near him the entire trip and saw him do all sorts of things that were actually impossible. Today, he's a priest. Much later, I heard from friends and his parents that he returned from Rome a completely different person. Instead of enjoying life to the fullest, thinking only of himself, he now lives to serve others. It took me 25 years to realize that a miracle had actually happened unnoticed during this trip.

My husband first told me about Pier Giorgio many years a go. Since then we've been praying for him in favor of young people in the family who are still far from God and Jesus. Thank you for this incredible journey towards the Saint-to-be.❤

Beautiful documentary! I was in Italy, in Rome….. for my first time at age 69, in May of this year. So much of what I saw while there was beyond my imagination. I sacred spaces, the first time I saw the Dome of St. Peter’s …. Many thoughts and words of this group finally encompassed the glory I felt! It was home. The very center of my Catholic faith!! ❤
