The defiance about not being slaves is not mocking the North Atlantic Slave Trade, but a defiant trope against the North African Barbary Pirates that were enslaving Europeans. This song was almost cancelled due to the word slave, it is what happens when people are ignorant of history.

She was dressed as Admiral Lord Nelson whose statue stands atop of his column in Trafalgar Square

The Charter mentioned in the song was that no person on British soil would ever be enslaved so if slaves were brought into Britain they were automatically freed.

Land of hope and glory and Jerusalem will blow your mind 😄

Deep down everyone who loves this country will stand up and be counted when needed and this proves it

We may not have our national flag flying outside every home but never, ever doubt our patriotism.

"Britain's never ever ever shall be slaves" also meant that anyone who entered our land enslaved was instantly a free man. There was a famous case where an American lost his slave while visiting as a pro bono lawyer argued the case that he was now free, and won.

This is the one real time you'll see British Patriotism. We love out Last Night of the Prom

Who in their right mind would think this was about the Transatlantic slave trade? It's about Britons defying the slavers and the idea of slavery. The passion is real. Celebrate it.

For context - Hyde Park holds around 65,000. I’m a Gen X and this has been going on as long as I can remember. Mum and Dad always had the last night on and we were “encouraged” to join in singing !!

As a proud Brit I'm watching this in floods of tears! 😭 We Brits don't really do open displays of patriotism, we bottle it all up, so stuff like this just opens the flood gates.
Great reaction guys. 🇬🇧🤝🏻🇺🇸

The conductor was an American and this was his first time at LNOTP hence the learner driver “L plate” on the back of the podium. He was told he would be surprised at the crowd’s reaction and he was absolutely amazed and delighted.

The world doesn’t understand the whole slavery thing, Britain has not had slaves since William the conqueror who banned its practice. From that moment on any who have landed on these shores are free. Also we closed down the slave trade at the expense of thousands of volunteer sailors who gave their lives for the cause, one of them my ancestor. The world should be thanking us instead of demanding reparations

We Brits don't normally display a lot of patriotism but, when we do, we do it the best. Check out Land of Hope and Glory (and think of your graduation). Also, Jerusalem and God Save the Queen from 2012.

In 1833 Britain spent £20 million funding the Slavery Abolition Act 1833, equivalent to approximately 40% of the Government’s total annual spend. A little known fact is that the way this was funded meant the cost was only fully repaid in 2015. Put simply, every Briton paying tax over those 182 years played a part in funding the British fight to end slavery.

Land of Hope and Glory is the one that gets me. Usually the last song sung and by the audience. The clips you see are taken both inside the Albert Hall and simultaneously in Hyde park for all those not able to get in the venue.

This is the last night of a two month very prestigious classical music season, where the audience and the performers have fun, it is the only evening when flags will be flown.
