Directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by George Lucas, Raiders of the Lost Ark is a 1981 masterpiece of action-adventure and the definitive origin story of Indiana Jones. Set in 1936, the plot stars Harrison Ford as Dr. Henry "Indiana" Jones Jr., a world-renowned archaeologist and professor tasked by U.S. Army Intelligence to recover the biblical Ark of the Covenant. He must find the ancient relic before a team of Nazi occultists, led by his rival Rene Belloq (Paul Freeman), can use its supernatural power to make Hitler’s armies invincible.
The narrative spans the globe, from the booby-trapped jungles of Peru to the bustling streets of Cairo and the hidden Map Room in Tanis. Joining Indy is the spirited Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen) and his loyal friend Sallah (John Rhys-Davies). The screenplay, written by Lawrence Kasdan, perfectly balances high-stakes cliffhangers, iconic practical stunts, and a touch of the supernatural. From the legendary rolling boulder opening to the visceral desert truck chase, the film redefined the adventure genre and established Indy’s iconic silhouette—complete with the fedora and bullwhip—as a symbol of cinematic heroism.
Featuring an unforgettable score by John Williams and groundbreaking visual effects by Industrial Light & Magic, the movie remains a benchmark for Hollywood blockbusters. It explores themes of faith, historical preservation, and the dangers of human hubris, culminating in a terrifying and spectacular opening of the Ark. As a cult classic that spawned a massive franchise, it remains a masterclass in pacing, humor, and world-building. Ultimately, Raiders of the Lost Ark is a timeless survival epic that proves some archaeological treasures are better left undisturbed.

It was an intense experience to see in theaters when I was 10. The tarantulas, the melting faces. I had no idea what I was in for.

The part where Marion is drinking from the ale coming out of the keg is a nice tribute to the old pirate movies where the swashbuckling hero takes time in the middle of the action to take a swig from a keg of opportunity.

This was Alfred Molina's (Doctor Octopus in Spider-Man) first film. He's the guy who betrays Indy in the cave at the beginning.

In the famous sword fight, Indy was supposed to use his whip to fight the soldier but he was sick that day and ad-lib’d the shooting. The scene was so loved that Spielberg kept it.

"I need one of the pieces your FATHER collected.". Indy to Marion.

Then you ask, was Abner her husband? What? 😅

The city of Tanis {Tinnis} was found in Egypt during WW2. It was the largest archaeological find in Egyptian history. More gold, silver and jewels found there than the rest of Egypt combined. It never made the news because of WW2 happening at the time.

@DanielTate-wt9jt 6 months ago

Abner was Marion's father. He was an archeologist as well and took on a young Indy (between 19-20 years old) as his apprentice, while Indy was studying to be an archeologist. Marion (who was 17) had a fling with Indy and fell in love, but Indy went off to further his career and broke her heart. Marion not only blames Indy for leaving, but she also blames him for her father not paying attention to her but instead being focused on teaching Indy.

Harrison Improvised the line. "It's not the years, its the mileage." Brilliant.
I've used/quoted that line for Years..... Especially after the wear and tear put on my body by the Military......

I saw this at a sneak preview at Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood about 2 weeks before it was released. Needless to say, the audience went crazy when it was over. It was an experience I will never forget.

Karen Allen was in a great movie with Jeff Bridges called Starman.

I still remember when this released, I was stationed in Jax, FL and the local cinema in Orange Park had hand painted murals of scenes from this film done by the local schools on the interior walls as one enters the lobby. As for the film itself, we see John Williams magic happening again on this collabaration between 2 individuals whom already profited from Williams' work with Jaws and Star Wars.

The reason this movie takes place in the 1930's is because it's meant to be an homage to the old pulp adventure stories that were popular in that time period. These stories are characterized by exciting adventure, exotic locales, a touch of the supernatural, and larger than life heroes. This is the era where superheroes originated and where science fiction established itself as a distinct genre, but they were originally just variations of the pulp adventure style. The Indiana Jones movies are written to fit that style as closely as possible, and they do a perfect job of it.

Fun fact: the Hovitos use curare as their dart and arrow poison. It is a potent neuromuscular paralytic that is used to make the drugs rocuronium, vecuronium, and pancuronium bromides used in hospitals to paralyze patients in OR and ICU settings. Curariforms have to enter the bloodstream directly to be effective. Tasting a small sample of it is harmless, as is eating the flesh of animals hunted with it, since oral ingestion causes it to be broken down by digestive enzymes into harmless products.

Producer: So how many disgusting, slithering, gory, stomach-churning things you want in this movie?
Screenwriter: Yes.

When the snake fell across Karen Allen's neck and she screamed. Her screams hadn't been enough to satisfy Steven Spielberg. So he waited for the right moment and tossed the snake on her neck. They said the scream that came out of her was so good, they dubbed it in, several times, in the movie.

Steven Spielberg had the coat hanger joke in "1941" but was forced to cut it. He swore to put it in every movie until it stays in. Luckily, it stayed in here, his very next movie.

@wbj2000 6 months ago

1:01:00 This was cutting edge special effects for this time. There was no computer CGI help at all.
The big guy Indy fought by the plane was the same actor as in the bar scene fight. He was dressed up of course.
