What does it really mean to face the thought of death? And what happens when pain, depression, and a loss of meaning make us feel as if life has suddenly become empty?

In this intense catechesis, Don Luigi Maria Epicoco begins with the Gospel image of Mary Magdalene before the tomb to lead us into one of the most profound human experiences: finding ourselves faced with a seemingly unanswerable void.

Mary's pain becomes the starting point for understanding why death seems so radically opposed to our desire to live and love. And love itself, with its ability to endure and not give up, becomes an extraordinary form of resistance in the face of suffering.

The reflection also addresses the emptiness of depression and the lack of meaning, that inner state in which we risk no longer truly living, but simply moving forward day after day. Finding a reason to live means learning to inhabit reality again, even when it doesn't correspond to what we would have desired.

Through the image of the Moon receiving its light from the Sun, Don Luigi invites us to understand that we don't necessarily have to find everything within ourselves: we can learn to receive light, meaning, and love. This also leads to a fundamental distinction between a love that continually seeks someone to fill our shortcomings and a love capable of bringing us to fulfillment.

One of the most touching passages is the story of Nello and his wife Chiara, who has suffered from Alzheimer's for twenty years: a testimony of fidelity, gratitude, and a love capable of continuing even when life changes radically.

The catechesis concludes by opening us to a greater hope: life and love can be stronger than emptiness and death.
