I am a Nagar from Gujarat and whatever she told is absolutely correct. We have never heard of Dahej and how things work around it because there has been no such system in our community.

Our weddings are very much spiritually inclined , we dont follow any regressive ritual. In our weddings , the groom's father and groom side's family is always concerned about bride's father , they always empathize with Bride's father and whatever bride's fathers wishes in terms of how the weeding would go , how many people from the groom's family should be attending the wedding everything is decided by bride's father. If he says 50 people, groom's father will hesitate bringing 55 to the wedding .

I feel so lucky being part of this community.

We are Thiyas from the northern part of Kerala, and our community has traditionally not followed the dowry system either. Girls have long been celebrated and treated on par with boys, and daughters have historically received an equal share of family property. It’s a tradition we’re proud of, and it shows that not all Hindu communities have practiced dowry or gender discrimination.

I always say that I want to be reborn in Gujarat. My nani who was born in 1903 had a bachelor’s degree in English. After partition my grandparents settled in Gujarat and all kids including my mother who have passed were in those times highly educated. My eldest Masi was professor of English, mama engineer, two masis medical doctors, one lawyer and my mom the youngest sibling a pathologist. When my Dadaji passed in 1989 my dadi told us, three of her granddaughters to go to the crematorium and give Agni to my Dadaji along with our father and brother. We drove cars and bikes at the age of 18 in the 1980-90s. My cousins who would visit us from other parts of India would be surprised to see women riding Bajaj scooters and some even Royal Enfields zooming past the clear wide roads. And we were not the only family. Every family in the neighborhood and cities across Gujarat had progressive mindset. Proud to be a Gujarati ❤️

Yes, I am a proud Nagar and my parents let me have my own decisions and learn from my own mistakes. I agree with Apara ji, It was a surprise to me when I saw it was not a norm in other communities within and outside gujaratis. My dad also let me perform last rights of my mum.
