I love the scene where an Ogron breaks in through a glass door and the Doctor just casually says, "How do you do?" Only Pertwee could pull that off.

The joy of classic Who is the ambition versus the production values of the time. It was a show that wasn't afraid to think big. That is why it was beloved. Now, it has limitless production values but thinks small, hamstrung by various, dreary, agendas.

This is my favorite Pertwee Dalek story.

As an American kid in the 80s, I grew up watching Genesis, Destiny, and Resurrection first before PBS cut back to William Hartnell. Jon's Dalek stories were among the last introduced in my location, and I thought they were fine. The one with the bullets was the most fascinating to me as a kid, although Day of the Daleks grew on me as an adult. The remastered version was exceptionally done. It left the integrity of the original version intact. Jon was terrific as usual.

The Ogron design/make up is brilliant, just like the Draconian approach. And for all its flaws I prefer keeping the original story as it was intended to be broadcast. George Lucas don't get me started.

I have vague memories of this as a 5 going 6 year old child back in 1972 when it was first shown (I also saw the omnibus repeat whenever that was). It was also the first Target book novelisation I got and my favourite, which I re-read many times. As a result, it's always been one of my favourites, so a success in my book.

I remember really enjoying this one as a teenager.  Still a good story as an older adult too.

Jon Pertwee famously hated the Daleks. They came back every season after this until Tom Baker's first season then had another 5 year hiatus

The Dalek voices really let this story down, but overall, as the return of the Daleks in colour, I like it!

Funny story. In the late 90s, I went into WH Smith to order "Day Of The Daleks" on Laserdisc. The female assistant retitled the story, "Dave The Dalek" 🤣

I love this story.  I think I saw it at just the right time as a young boy.   I really like the newer upgrade sequences too, with the changed voices and increased dalek menace in the different timelines.  For me, it is fabulous.

Simple answer, no. It depends also on when you first watched this story. For me, I was nine years old when this went out on BBC 1 for the first time, and I was so excited that the Daleks were coming back. I had vague memories of Evil of the Daleks, which seemed like an eternity ago to me. So, I will always judge this story on my first viewing of it and how I felt at the time. The Target novelisation also cemented this story as one of my favourites from the Pertwee Era. But even now when viewing it, I see it as largely successful and very entertaining.

For me the subplot of this story is the redemption of The Controller. When we meet him he’s a Quisling “from a family of Quislings,” the scene where the Doctor persuades him that the Daleks can be defeated sets up his decision to help the Doctor return to the 20th Century. His final line “Who knows, I might have helped to exterminate you!” fits the time paradox story, because when The Doctor succeeds and prevents this timeline from happening, it means that The Controller hasn’t just sacrificed his life but his entire existence and those of his ancestors, none of whom will ever have existed in the restored future.

As to the Ogrons’ disappearance, from what I’ve read Nation haters them and after he got control of the Dalek stories he didn’t want to use them. Although the Spiridons, Exxilons and the captured prisoners fill a similar role in the subsequent stories.

Day Of The Daleks also presents the Daleks as having already conquered Earth, as opposed to being in the process of conquering somewhere and the Doctor turns up to put the proverbial spanner in the works. This makes them less dynamic and more bureaucratic so the flatter, quieter voices make sense to me.

The production team’s lack of experience with Dalek stories means it’s very much a story with Daleks in it rather than a Dalek story so it been a four parter means there’s less padding which would have exposed their limitations even more. I’ve a preference for four parters, with Pertwee especially so it’s an enjoyable watch for me.

I saw this Dalek story aged 3 and also this been the first Dalek serial in colour.

Great video. By  1972 I had been obsessed with the Daleks since the William Hartnell Dalekmania days and the excitement at their return had been stoked by much publicity in the media. However, I do recall a sense of disappointment at their low key involvement in the story, the weird voices and their dull colours...these did not seem like the Daleks we had loved in '65. Now of course, I adore this story which is wrapped in a cloak of nostalgia for a vanished time  and even those terrible Dalek voices time travel me back to teatimes in the early 70s. The sets, particularly the Dalek control tower and Sir Reginald Styles' mansion interiors are spooky and impressively lit  and the slightly inhuman look of the controller and his team of zombiefied  women have a nicely creepy effect. 'Day' has become one of those favourite stories I repeat watch if I need some cosy, nostalgic TV.

I thought it was a brilliant story. Watched it when it came out and loved it

Shura is played by Jimmy Winston, the original keyboard player of The Small Faces. I think he met Steve Marriott at acting school.

I was six when this was originally broadcast.  I loved it soooo much.  My very earliest memory of Doctor Who is the Autons breaking through the windows in Spearhead From Space when I must have been only four!  There's one scene in Day of The Daleks that always means something for me.  It's The Doctor and one of the rebels running across some wasteland.  It's a very short sequence but every time I see it I'm reminded of being a kid watching Doctor Who.   😀

Beautiful Radio Times artwork by Eagles Frank Bellamy

I liked the introduction of the Ogrons, the henchmen of The Daleks.  A shame they didn't bring back after Pertwee (I'm not counting the reboot series)
