Saweetie seemingly had everything needed to become one of the biggest female rappers of her generation. Viral records, major-label backing, hit singles, huge collaborations, celebrity relationships, millions of followers and major brand deals. At one point, she appeared to be everywhere.

But years after “ICY GRL,” “My Type,” “Tap In” and “Best Friend,” Saweetie still hasn't released the debut album that was originally expected in 2021.

So what happened?

In this episode of Stunted Growth Music, we look at Saweetie's rise, her relationship with Quavo, the massive industry push behind her, questions surrounding her music and performances, the repeatedly delayed Pretty Bitch Music, and why becoming a celebrity never quite translated into becoming the rap superstar many expected.

Was Saweetie simply pushed beyond what her talent could sustain, or did the industry give up on her too soon?

She’s not talented… she just pretty

I think sticking to her bougie college girl aesthetic would have served her a little longer, she’s always been business minded — I think the label pushed her to look like everyone else, she couldn’t keep up and that’s why she fell off :(

The record label don’t develop her talent, they just throw her out there for quick money

I feel like the label saw a pretty, educated Black and Asian girl from the suburbs who came from a good home and had potential, and they tried to force her into this “hood” persona because they didn’t know how to market who she really was.
She was never an actress, and you could tell the image wasn’t authentic. Her original image was more of a classy, get-money, successful girl music was about money, flexing, and enjoying life. Then they completely switched her persona, and it just didn’t fit her.

THIS is the problem with modern-day hip hop: The people who are in charge of things are trying to push folks who have NO real talent to the forefront just for a quick buck while ignoring those who do have the talent to last..

Her government name is more 🔥 than her stage name 💎

So here's the thing: I grew up on DaBrat, Missy Elliott, Lil Kim, Foxy Brown, Lauryn Hill, Angie Martinez, MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, etc. and none of them sounded the same, looked the same, acted the same, nada! DaBrat and Missy got on tracks together and sounded like they were trying to slaughter each other bar for bar. Today I can't tell you the difference between any of these new rappers except the tone of some of their voices.

Saweetie is the Blueprint for what the Industry has become. They try to sell the Artist, before the music. I can honestly say I could not pick her out of a lineup nor name any of her songs. It used to be the other way around. And when they can't sell the artist, they give up on the music .. It became more about her celebrity. Hence why there are no bonafied Superstar artists. How many knew she was a rapper or even an artist? We forget or even know, what a "famous" person actually does..

With that said, you should do Rubi Rose next

I remember this tweet going viral some years back. “Saweetie’s music career is like an iPhone with 1% battery everyone can see it’s about to die, but she’s still acting like it’s fully charged. She’s blaming her label for not putting a dollar behind her, but let’s be real… even if they did, that dollar would’ve been better spent at Dollar Tree buying a broom to sweep up all the flop singles she’s been dropping”

The problem was as you rightfully pointed out that her as a rapper her as a musician was never the selling point she her team and her label did not make her talent or her music the selling point. Say what you will about Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, or Megan Thee Stallion but all three of them especially Nicki Minaj are known for music!!! yes their personalities and their tours and the private life that’s always a mess plays apart in their celebrity status or in their notoriety however, you ask any Nicki Minaj fan to give you a verse like let’s say the monster verse and they know it, Word for Word ask any Cardi B fan to give you a verse from Bodak yellow they can give you all the verses😂 ask Megan Thee Stallion fan to tell you about hot girl summer or big old freak again they can give you every lyric, ask somebody about Saweetie and they actually have to stop and think about it because the first thing that connects in your brain when you hear her name is that she’s a pretty girl😅🤷🏾‍♀️ and that right there was the problem and is why her having a career in music I think is a missed opportunity. She and her team have made it so that we identify pretty privilege with her and not talent.

As a Boston native you gotta do Bia next had HIGH hopes for her even got a feature with J Cole but ever since then shes kind of stalled out

@CrystalSingh-b7o 4 weeks ago

You didnt bring up the yacht parties!!!?? That is really what killed her career 😢

Saweetie is just a hot chick who is chasing her brand power and money than her music— she thrives on singles, samples like Petey Pablo’s, and her supermodel‑level looks. She dated Quavo from Migos. I totally felt her music does suck, and she ain’t got no bars and no lyrics.

Her granddad played for the 49ers

I love saweetie, I don’t think she was ever really serious so as being a rapper, she’s just beautiful and she made that song when it blew up. I love that she keeps trying, even though she keeps getting all these criticism, but so easy makes most of her money from sponsorships deals Collabs.
