"I have led a toothless life," he thought. "A toothless life. I have never bitten into anything. I was waiting. I was reserving myself for later on—and I have just noticed that my teeth have gone." Jean-Paul Sartre

Takeaway: don’t question what if you fail, question what if I don’t even try.

“More is lost by indecision than wrong decision” - Kevin Finnerty

I have never felt so specifically called out by a single video in my life. Key takeaways:
1. Idealism blinds.
2. Commitment is better than indecision to achieve true freedom.
3. Avoiding failure also means avoiding success.
4. Fearing being ordinary can be more halting than fearing being nothing.
5. The motion of action is better than the inaction of doubt.
6. You need to step up.
7. I am likely taking life too seriously. An antidote to this is thinking: "If I am 100 failures away from success, then it's better to fail faster."

Thanks so much for the video!

Satre isn’t laughing at Mathieu. He is Mathieu. This book is an indictment of his own choices. The age of reason is a confession.

He wanted to see himself as a misunderstood idealist but he was a coward and a failure... you got me 😅

"Do or do not, there is no try"
                                                 - Master Yoda

his reminded me of late Syd Barett. "As long as I stay in bed and do nothing, everything is possible. "

This sent me into a fantastic spiral of “How much of my indecision is ADHD and how much is personal failure?” I want to cry and scream and break out of this rut. And I love the part where it says, “If you knew you were 100 failures away from success, how fast would you rush into failures?” It makes me want to do the necessary, scary things. I don’t want to call my dad, I don’t want to start the process of selling our house, I don’t want to do the emotional labor of being a good uncle, brother, son, or anything that ties me to my family. My wife is moving away to another state for work, and she was my last hope for pretending that nothing else is important outside of our home. It’s all going away and my heels can’t dig deep enough into the ground to stop the passage of time. Lord oh lord, this video hit me hard. I need to step up.

"he is a coward and a failure" (pause, deep sigh, takes headphones off)

This really hurts. I’ve been stuck in this cycle for years. Fear is what’s keeping me where I am. The fear of failure and disappointment. I know time is running out but I feel paralysed. This made me have some clarity. Thank you

me throughout this whole video "is this a fucking play about us?"

Great video, thank you. For example I never thought an ebook could really help until I read Obsidian Mindset of Becoming, I tried techniques from this book and my whole mental direction shifted in a few days, crazy experience

TheYoutube algorithm is clearly sending me a message with this video. As an avid overthinker who fears failing, I find myself in a similar situation taking no action due to the pressure that comes along with failure. Potential is never enough, you need to be courageous enough to face the fear of failure in order to understand what it means to succeed. great video

Reminds me of this haunting passage i keep saved, from Sylvia plath, in the bell jar

"I saw my life branching out before me like the green fig tree in the story. From the tip of every branch, like a fat purple fig, a wonderful future beckoned and winked. One fig was a husband and a happy home and children, and another fig was a famous poet and another fig was a brilliant professor, and another fig was Ee Gee, the amazing editor, and another fig was Europe and Africa and South America, and another fig was Constantin and Socrates and Attila and a pack of other lovers with queer names and offbeat professions, and another fig was an Olympic lady crew champion, and beyond and above these figs were many more figs I couldn't quite make out. I saw myself sitting in the crotch of this fig tree, starving to death, just because I couldn't make up my mind which of the figs I would choose. I wanted each and every one of them, but choosing one meant losing all the rest, and, as I sat there, unable to decide, the figs began to wrinkle and go black, and, one by one, they plopped to the ground at my feet."

a modern philosophy, it's where we get the self-absorbed culture of today -  "love yourself" "live your own truth" "follow your bliss".  And the obsession with identity. And self-help culture. And tiktok instagram. The whole thing makes people unhappy. For thousands of years virtue was seen as the path to happiness, in particular the 7 classical virtues, but modern people wholeheartedly reject this for some reason.

This hit me so hard. All my life I've wanted to be this idealistic person who is good at studies, has numerous hobbies, takes care of themselves and their relationships and overall just has a perfect life. But the truth is I've never taken any action to do it. I've never committed to my disciplines, I hardly do what i say - always waiting for the perfect time that will never come..
I will take this video as a sign to become serious with the kind of life i want to lead. Thanks

The metaphor of the "toothless life" is a haunting wake-up call for anyone who prides themselves on their potential while avoiding the friction of reality. It’s a powerful reminder that freedom isn't found in the preservation of options, but in the courage to make an irrevocable choice, even if it means failing. Your connection to Jung's puer aeternus and Sylvia Plath's fig tree perfectly captures that paralysis—waiting for the perfect path only to realize the waiting itself was the choice that defined the outcome. Thank you for this honest and challenging perspective.

This feels like someone pulled me out of my bed along with the sheets and splashed a bucket of water on my face.

If you ever meet someone who read this book and doesn't understand it, then that might be a person who you should study, because they are doing it right.
