Casey is a good friend to have in your corner.

The biggest sign of respect is a person who honors you behind your back

I remember that after Theo "insulted" Jon, Jon posted that gif of a tiny dog barking at a big dog behind a sliding door.
Then the other half of the door slides open, the big dog briefly looks at the opening, and the tiny dog stops barking, looks at the camera, terrified and confused 😂😂😂

I spent 23 years as a solo self-taught programmer, then 3 years working for a tech startup in my first software engineering role, then the last 3 years developing solo. And I learned the software industry is like a cult.

As soon as you question any convention, principle, design pattern, or "best practice", you are immediately forced to get with the group-think or else. It's like dealing with sheep who do things without ever questioning them, nor adapting to the specific situation at hand. And the complete refusal to admit that one thing can be implemented effectively several ways.

It's like dealing with insane cultish people.

Welp. 30 seconds in and Theo already sounds like an a$$hole

I really started seeing Theo for who he is after that Pirate Software debacle

Why is every time I hear that some new controversy broke out in the tech focused Twitter it ends up being about Theo being stupid?

thanks for pointing this out randomly, i some times watched his content, but never again

Let's see Theo ship literally anything that runs at 60fps

The man is right about most of the things that make people mad.

It's one thing to disagree with Jonathan Blow on a certain topic. Saying he's a bad developer is insane. Dude is writing his own programming language. That automatically makes him, or anyone, good.

I don't follow Theo really closely now, but I can remember when he was building an S3 wrapper and promoting it like he invented the wheel and like uploading files to cloud storage was some kind of unimaginable feat of knowledge and experience. Or when he built a wrapper for tRPC, which was already built on top of Zod, TanStack, etc. And even those things were built (in large part) by his team, not him. There's no way he can even comprehend the levels of knowledge that the best programmers have; what it takes to actually build something instead of just gluing together stuff other people made and vibecoding the way. His relevance comes from X, not from the things he built.

calling yourself a developer when you change configurations in a frontend javascript library for a living is a stretch

Lol whenever people try to get at Jblow I can't help but think these are the kids who blame their dads for everything

Never heard of this Theo person.

Genuinely who tf is theo

I follow Jon's streams semi-regularly, you can tell he's working on something huge. Besides a guy with the track record that he has - two games which I would both consider brilliant - just doesn't need to rush and prove anything unless he wants to. I think the idea that he's insecure when he blocks people doesn't hold much water either. He certainly is very grumpy and curmudgeonly much of the time, but I think he just want to maintain an environment which is good for his thinking. I can relate to that. If I was bombarded by people's annoying ideas and drivel each day, I would start blocking them too without question. You gotta think about this way - what does Theo have for Jon. They're not friends and he cannot teach him anything. So don't take it personally.

One thing I will say is that it doesn't help much that Jon is a bit of a troll himself and enjoys pulling pranks on people, while himself not having much patience for the same behavior, especially not from strangers. His demeanor is not well suited for the modern internet, unfortunately. But it's a reason why I love him and his work, despite some of his flaws. His opinions are always either extremely sharp observations or a downright refusal to engage, where the latter is at the very least funny to watch.

I am so not a fan of Jon but Casey cooked in this post.

twitter drama!

Theo has always been an idiot, long before all this drama. Ever since his reaction to gpt5, I knew he was a 0.1x developer.
