Who was Mabon, the mysterious lost god of Celtic Britain?
Every autumn, thousands of people celebrate Mabon at the fall equinox. But the Mabon of modern Paganism has a much older and stranger story. In Welsh mythology, Mabon ap Modron is the divine child who was stolen as an infant and imprisoned, before being rescued in one of the great quests of medieval Welsh mythology.
But is Mabon connected to Maponos, the Celtic god worshipped across Britain and Gaul? And if so, who was Maponos?
In this film I follow the trail through King Arthur's Britain, Welsh mythology, archaeology and sacred landscapes, from Mabon to Maponos to Apollo, Nodens, Nuada, Angus Óg, Orpheus and Demeter.
Along the way we visit Roman inscriptions, ancient temples, Neolithic monuments and explore the possibility that the story of the Divine Son, the Great Mother and the returning light may be far older than the surviving Celtic myths.
So where did Mabon go? And what might it mean to find him again?
