First Watch Reaction | Heated Rivalry Episode 1 “Rookies”

Heated Rivalry Episode 1, “Rookies,” wastes zero time setting up one of the most compelling enemies-to-lovers dynamics we’ve seen in ages.
This is our first watch reaction to the premiere, where Canadian hockey prodigy Shane Hollander and Russian phenom Ilya Rozanov collide on the ice and immediately start building a rivalry that is equal parts competitive fire and undeniable chemistry. Between the international tournament face-offs, the chirping, and the commercial shoot that turns into something much more charged, Episode 1 makes it very clear that these two are playing a much bigger game than hockey. Their secret encounter sets the tone for a story about ambition, desire, and the impossible pressure of keeping a connection hidden inside the pro sports world. Come hang with your internet best friends as we react, scream a little, and buckle in for what looks like a seriously addictive sports romance.

‘This is a slower burn than I anticipated’ is something nobody else has ever said about Heated Rivalry 😂

ALSO, Jay tearing up at little Shane wearing his hookup suit was so damn relatable!

I just want to say that, in the midst of everything else going on, I never imagined a time where a show about a mlm couple would be as popular and appreciated as this show is getting.

12:05 If that’s making y’all emotional, you’re not surviving the rest of the series without weeping!!

This show had a shoestring budget, and had two cameras for the whole shoot. The fact the cinematography, the visuals, and the style are stunning is incredible. They did so much with skill and talent.

I love how they both had no idea how to react at the end, like they wouldn’t normally watch a show like this but damn it’s good.

Jacob Tierney said in an interview that he loves showing not telling, so you are getting it! 28:30

Thanks Amanda! and Boys, this isnt HBO. This is a Crave production. Heated Rivalry is 100% Canadian! 🍁

Jacob Tierney, who is the showrunner, is an amazing director and writer and if Adam is intrigued enough with how Jacob's camera direction particularly in the hockey scenes, you would definitely appreciate and enjoy Jacob's other shows like Letterkenny and, most specifically, Shoresy. Both are Canadian comedy gems with lots of heart and laughs. Anyone that is familiar with Jacob Tierney's game knew instinctively he'd create a genuinely good adaptation of Heated Rivalry.

Thank you for mentioning how well-shot this show is! So many reactors aren’t giving this show enough credit for how much attention was given to the cinematography.

There are so many brilliant and astonishing things about this series. They shot this entire season in 36 days with a budget of $11-12 million (CAD). That’s $8-9 million in USD. Unknown actors. Really elegant use of framing, sound, and a Volume soundstage to make something profoundly cinematic. Adapting a book that is overtly and unapologetically sexual and centred on a same sex love story. When I heard they were working on this my first response was “HOW?!? Are Hallmark and OnlyFans doing a collab?” Never in a million years did I expect this considerately told, respectfully adapted, beautifully made work of art. Kudos to Jacob Tierney, Jackson Parrell (DP), their entire team, and the two lead actors, who turned in star-making performances. I look forward to your journey through the arcs of these two characters. And yes, you will need tissues. Also, add my voice to the “Thank you, Amanda!” chorus. ❤
