DÁMASO ALONSO IN DEPTH - March 18, 1979 - B/W - 88 minutes
In 1978, Dámaso Alonso (1898-1990), poet, philologist, and academic, had just received the Cervantes Prize, and five volumes of his "Complete Works" had already been published.
He describes the Generation of '27's first foray into the world, the origins of philology: "Menéndez Pidal was the only philologist in 1905, with eight disciples, and from there they multiplied like a pyramid." He also speaks of the transformation of the Royal Spanish Academy.
The author of "Children of Wrath" (1946) taught the first course on Saussure in Spain, translated Joyce's "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" in 1926, and taught for years at the universities of Oxford, Leipzig, and Columbia.
He traveled throughout the Americas giving lectures: "We must attempt to bring all Spanish speakers closer together." His "Spanish Poetry, Essay on methods and stylistic limits" and his studies on Saint John of the Cross are a small part of the extensive work of the multi-award-winning essayist.
