There are a LOT of homebrew DnD 5e rules out there, and I just learned a LOT more of them. I posted asking people to share their favorite DnD homebrew rules and received over 600 replies. Let's dive into them and decide which we'd use in our own games.

All of these rules gives interesting insight into how people perceive mechanics and chance.

"No prepared spells" - all Sorcerers have left the chat.

For us, whenever an AC is matched, it represents a clashing of skills (or blades, or fists, or wills, or whatever) and the two parties roll a contested roll. If the defense wins, they dodge or parry the attack. If they crit, they have a chance to counterattack. If offense wins, the attack hits, with a chance to crit. Either or both sides can use up a reaction to add something relevant to the roll (proficiency, dex, str, etc).

I home brewed it into an entirely different system.

Revised Dying - The Dying Condition
If your own hit points are reduced to zero, you may choose to gain the Dying Condition rather than simply falling unconscious.
While in the dying condition, your only movement option is to crawl 5 ft., you are prone, and you cannot stand or take reactions. On your turn, you may take one action or bonus action (but not both), so long as what you attempt to do can be done while prone. At the end of your turn, you make a death saving throw as normal, and may choose to fall unconscious.
If you become stable, you no longer need to make death saving throws, but otherwise still have the dying condition for as long as you remain at zero hit points.

For that second one:
The warlock casting eldritch blast twice to shoot a minigun from their hands

Rally Maneuver - instead of granting one character temporary hit points, you designate a target objective/order (hit the enemy with melee, move over there, surround him etc). Everyone meeting the objective receive temporary hit points.

Goodness the amount of homebrew to make the game easier versus harder is staggering. To each their own and it’s your game to change how you see fit but this says a lot about the d and d community.

I know it hurts sorcerers, but I am loving the magic system from Shadowdark. No spell slots. You prepare your spells for the day and make a caster check each time you attempt to cast it. Succeed and it goes off. You can cast the spell as often as you like until you fail the check at which point you lose it for the rest of the day. Simple and it allows PCs to do more in a day before they run out of resources.

Wisdom is the Perception stat, so it makes perfect sense that that would be the alternate Initiative stat

Crazy how many people suggestion alternative ability scores for skill checks, when that's legitimately a rule

0:42 It's called the "Perkins crit" and is immensely popular because he's a designer of 5e - how did this not make it into the video?

Bonus action disengage costs half your movement OR allows for opportunity attacks with disadvantage. This rule has worked well at my table.

25:00 this was a rule that we had at my table, I like to call it “Jumping on a Roll”, and I despise it with a passion. So much so that when I started DMing for same table, I told them that I didn’t like that and we weren’t doing it when I DM. There was a bit of pushback, but when I explained that it felt very cheesy, especially since you’d all be getting the info at the same time anyway, it defeats the purpose rolling

Allow the use of Action Surge for a Fighter that is Unconscious/Dying when his turn passes, for him to Second Wind and get up by himself. This allows Fighters to be resistant to anticlimatic one-shot-kills at the start of the fight and still do something. They are the most frontline out of the frontlines after all.

18:23 this is the ,,ARMED AND DANGEROUS! AGAIN!! AGAIN! AGAIN!'' rule of DND

🥳🫂👍🏿

Thank you for sharing - I’m on a quest to collect every house rule on youtube and beyond - I’d love to hear about any others you use at your table or how the ones you adopted panned out ❤

Just like the Feats based on character level and not class level, I say if you are multi classing and both base classes would get Extra Attack at level 5 you get it at level 5. So a Fighter-2 Monk-3 would still get it. This would exclude Hexblade and Bladesinger since it’s not a class feature for them.

@emilyavalon9781 7 months ago

With the starting at 10 in stats one, I wouldn't want to do that from base levels, but I did play in a game that ran a "Commoner" arc at the start, using a Commoner homebrew that was its own "class", with you starting at 10 in all stats and gaining class-like baby abilities and specializations as you leveled up. Once you got to level 5 commoner, then you got a real class, but you got to start at level 2 and get a free feat related to the specializations that you picked as a Commoner. It was a ton of fun.
