On July 31, 1944, USS Parche entered a heavily escorted Japanese convoy on the surface and fought one of the most intense close-quarters submarine actions of World War II. Under Commander Lawson “Red” Ramage, Parche maneuvered between enemy ships while illuminated by flares and under gunfire, repeatedly switching between bow and stern torpedo attacks as the convoy scattered around her. This video reconstructs how the submarine penetrated the formation, fired nineteen torpedoes during the running battle, survived an attempted ramming, and escaped without a shell piercing her pressure hull. The action ultimately earned Ramage the Medal of Honor and became one of the most remarkable American submarine attacks of the Pacific War.
