It all started with a sentence that deeply moved me. One of my patients, after 48 hours of labor and three sleepless nights, looked at me with tears in her eyes and said,
"I failed."
In this episode, I revisit that birth and that pivotal moment when the dynamics shift and medicine becomes necessary. Because no, supporting the natural process doesn't mean being against medicine. It means knowing when to recognize its usefulness.
I also talk about what a cesarean section truly is. Major abdominal surgery that opens seven layers of tissue, performed while the mother is conscious. An intense sensory experience: the lights of the operating room, the noise of the machines, the smell of the electrocautery, the anticipation of the baby's first cry.
And yet, in our society, this experience is often minimized. We quickly hear:
"At least your baby is fine." “But behind that statement, there’s sometimes a woman who has to recover from abdominal surgery while learning to care for her baby.
I also talk about the guilt many women feel after a cesarean section, because our collective narrative of birth almost exclusively values vaginal delivery and physiological birth.
Yet, between 20 and 25% of births are by cesarean section. It’s not an exception. It’s a reality.
This episode is an invitation to change our perspective on cesarean sections and to give women who experience this birth their rightful place.
Because birth isn’t a competition.
No birth is worth more than another.
And as I say at the end of this episode:
A cesarean section isn’t a failed birth.
It’s a birth that required a different kind of courage.”
