Christian Caller Claims God Liberated Women | Skeptical Heretic & Alyssa Ljub

This call is a clip from an episode of Chewed Gum, a live call-in show that I co-host every Tuesday night at 7pm EST on ‪@qnaline‬

In this live call, a caller argued that women “need God” and that Christianity is the main reason women have freedom today. We ended up diving into history, religion, women’s rights, and the impact belief systems have on society — and honestly… it got pretty intense.

I’m always open to conversations about faith, but what matters to me is evidence, nuance, and accountability. We talked about whether religion has helped or harmed women, the “no true Christian” argument, and why social progress is usually more complicated than one single cause.

This episode was co-hosted by Taylor of Skeptical Heretic 🫶🏻

It's interesting how people credit Christianity for women's rights when most of those rights only came after secular reform movements challenged religious authority.

What a birthday boy of a caller, he panics at the slightest pushback.

The idea that Christianity gave women rights is LAUGHABLE. it treats women as property, that men can sell their daughters, that a woman must stay silent in the presence of men that aren't their father or husband. Also the cope of "Christians ended slavery" doesn't work when Christians used the bible to justify slavery for roughly 1500 years. Slavery ended due to humanist ideals

I wonder if this idiotic interlocutor knows how pregnant teenage girls were treated in Catholic Ireland up until the early 70s?

Curtis kept doing the "not true Christian" dance like it was a full workout routine 😂.

Did you know in traditional Cherokee society only women could own personal property. All other property was communal. If a man left his wife he left with nothing 😁😁😁

So when Christians 🍇 women and forced natives in the Americas to become Christian, how did that help women? Curtis is insane

Curtis hasn't read the bible. It's really horrible to women. Holy shit.

9:15 Atheism is not a cope for anything. It's an answer to a single question: "Do you think god does the real?" "No."

Christianity has existed for 2000 years, and during those 2 millenia, women have obtained more rights, therefore, Christianity caused women to get more rights. OK - Soy sauce has been around for 2200 years, too. Maybe we are liberated because of soy sauce. 🙄

I love how these men feel like they have to speak in a condescending tone when they speak to women but he would never do that around a real man because he would catch five fingers to the face real quick

All religious people interpret their religious texts, teachings, and experiences to create their deity and religion. This makes it very easy to attribute certain historical, societal trends to their created religion.

@Jack-sy8mr 7 months ago

He keeps arguing that Christianity was the main force behind women's liberation?

The fist story in the Bible is how women were created to be subservient to men and sin is all their fault?🙄

@Aboveyourraisin 7 months ago (edited)

He's a ridiculous propagandist. He's also sexist. He thinks women have more rights today NOT because they struggled and fought for them for 2,000 years, but because Jesus did it for us. And women are like children? 🤮
