The Horrifying Legends of Lake Ontario

The Tape Library

Lake Ontario is one of the world's great inland seas. Beneath its dark waters lie hundreds of shipwrecks, while its shores have long been associated with strange lights, ghost stories, mysterious creatures and tales of sailors who never came home.

In this episode of The Tape Library, we explore the darker mysteries of Lake Ontario.

From the notorious Marysburgh Vortex and the disappearance of the crew of the Bavaria, to the legend of the burning ship Nilfred and the strange story of the Sprite, Lake Ontario has accumulated a remarkable collection of stories over centuries of maritime history.

We'll also investigate reports of strange lights over the lake, including a UFO sighting investigated by scientists from the University of Toronto, before turning to the lakes various monsters.

And finally, we return to the real tragedy of Moses Dulmage, a young sailor who was lost on Lake Ontario during a violent autumn storm. His death became entwined with one of the Great Lakes' most enduring pieces of maritime folklore: the Witch of November.

Some of these stories have plausible explanations. Others remain part of the folklore surrounding one of North America's most mysterious bodies of water.

Everywhere has a ghost story.

Do you know any stories about the lake that I missed? I'd love to hear them. 👇

Most people focus on the shipwrecks, but from a forensic hydrology perspective, deep freshwater lakes like Lake Ontario hide an unsettling physical law: below a certain depth, the water stays near 4°C year-round. Bacterial decomposition virtually halts, meaning bodies drowned decades ago don't decompose or float—they just remain anchored in the dark, perfectly preserved. You aren't just looking at sunken wood down there; you're looking at a frozen timeline of silent witnesses.

I grew up near Lake Ontario and spent a lot of time there (American side). It's a beautiful lake and seeing a storm blow over it from the Canadian side is awe-inspiring.

Don't often get a chuckle from your videos, but I laughed so hard at the 'it's not like someone is going to rename a lake or anything'. Love the content ! and Lake Ontario forever

On a clear day I once canoed 5 km straight into Lake Ontario. We had no cell phone or GPS and didn't tell anyone where we were going. It was a dumb thing to do. 5 km is far enough to not recognize the shore, and was very disorienting.

As an American, I apologize for the trouble. 😅 Lake Ontario is the name.

I live right next to lake Ontario, in a quiet little town between Toronto and Hamilton. It so beautiful when the sun hits it and the water sparkles, or when the mist rises off it in the early winter. But, she's deep and dark, and keeps her secrets well. don't underestimate those lakes.

I live five minutes from the shore of Lake Ontario. I used to work on a ferry that would cross the Lake to Toronto daily. In high school, we used to go there and walk along the shore and down the pier until dawn. The lake is enormous. One trip, there were waves the size of ocean waves, hurling the enormous catamaran we were on up and down, your stomach sunk in your throat the waves were so high. It really is a gigantic body of fresh water.

These stories are terrifying.

Politics aside, I can't see messing with the powers of a place whose name is so old, so rooted in the waters and air and Lights and turning of the Earth:

I'd leave it alone.
