These schoolgirls, who would be 95 years old this year, were students 81 years ago. They attended the Hiroshima Prefectural First Girls’ High School, a prestigious institution commonly known as “First Prefectural Girls’ High.”

The atomic bomb mercilessly claimed the lives of 301 people—students and faculty members—who were living there at the time.

The school emblem of First Prefectural Girls’ High features two fireflies. It embodies the hope that the students would “become fine individuals, just like those who study diligently at night by the light of fireflies.”

On that day 81 years ago, all the female students—both those who perished and those who survived—carried the “pride” of First Prefectural Girls’ High School in their hearts. This summer marks the 81st anniversary of the atomic bombing. These are the memories of the female students who lived through Hiroshima. (Broadcast on August 6, 2026)
