What do I actually take with me when I head out for several days of dinghy cruising?

This time I’m getting ready for a few days on the Schlei in northern Germany. Before heading off, I lay everything out next to my old Kormoran WANDERER and go through my packing list – food and water, cooking gear, sleeping bags, clothes, sails, paddle and rudder, lights, camera gear, firewood and a few other things that have found their place on board over time.

I use a simple printed checklist because there’s nothing more annoying than arriving at the water with the boat ready to launch, only to discover that something essential is still sitting at home. Something as small as the tiller can make the difference between going sailing and not going sailing at all.

So before every trip, I go through the list once and make sure I have the things I really need.

I’ve also posted the complete packing list here on the channel as a picture post. If you’re going dinghy cruising yourself, feel free to use it as inspiration for your own list. And if you spot something that’s missing – something you always take on your own trips – let me know in the comments.

This trip takes me back to the Schlei for a few days on the water. The days are getting shorter, the nights longer and colder – so the packing list looks a little different from a summer trip.
