He will never be the master of musical development. Instead, he created and mastered a new form of musical juxtaposition. It's a musical cubism in a way. My favorite composer.
Dialogues de Carmelites is a unique and heart wrenching opera. I have a particular fondness for the melodie ' Bleuet' which is surely among the very finest of its genre.
To see and hear Henri Sauguet, perhaps Satie's greatest student/admirer is so wonderful. What great pieces he composed with a glance always cast upon Erik.... this is a great Documentary... many thank for posting.
The incredibly moving song at about 37 minutes is "C", which was a bridge known to the Parisians as a patriotic locale. When the song premiered in occupied Paris, the German troops in attendance didn't understand why the Parisians in the audience were standing and weeping. Poulence had been accused of being a "sympathizer", and this was his response.
Fine documentary, except for Gruber's statement that Cocteau's death was a great shock for Poulenc: Cocteau survived him. The shock was Cocteau's when Poulenc died.
Very nice and rare video. Thank you. Poulenc has deeply marked my ears. My mother played hundred times the Concert champêtre, so original and hauntingly beautiful. The concerto for 2 pianos 😍. Check the Jussen brothers version, absolutely perfect. Then discovered the Stabat Mater, organ concerto, and the Litanies à la Vierge Noire. Check the Orchestre de Radio France with Mikko Franck version. An absolute jewel, sung by young singers, with a perfect diction, such a moving piece 😶🌫️ 🥹!!!
