Jonathan López-Vera debunks the samurai myth that the West invented: the katana as the main weapon, ninjas, and the Bushido code. He is a professor of Modern History at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and holds a PhD in History from Pompeu Fabra University, with highest honors and the Extraordinary Doctoral Prize. He wrote History of the Samurai (Satori), which Tuttle published in English, and *Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the Europeans*. In 2011, he founded HistoriaJaponesa.com and since 2012 has co-edited the academic journal *Asiadémica*. He told us anecdotes about his tattoos that could fill another whole conversation :) In 2025, we saw him speaking on El Condensador de Fluzo (The Flux Capacitor) on TVE 📺

ABOUT ME
Hi, I'm Javi. I'm a humanist, I love math, and I enjoy interviewing people who enrich my life. My motivation is to learn from those who know the most and share that knowledge to contribute to making the world a better place, starting from my small town where I live happily. "Other People's Lives" is a personal project that began to overcome my shyness and continued out of fascination with humanity, science, and the humanities. Explore our reports and interviews and let me know if you've learned anything.
