This man has been my hero for over 20 years.

Richard “Dick Proenneke was born 4 May 1916 in Primrose, Lee County, Iowa.  His parents were William (1880-1972) and Laura Boone-Proenneke (1884-1966).  Dick was a middle child in a family with six or seven children. He served in the Navy as a carpenter during World War II.  In 1950, Dick was an instructor at a diesel training school in Portland, Oregon. Dick left Alaska and went to live with a brother in California in 1999.  He died there in 2003, was cremated and had his ashes scattered near the cabin he so loved in Alaska.

I believe that God had a cabin ready for him when he went home to heaven. With birds feeding out of his hand and beautiful animals all around. God is so good!

His relationship with the land & self reliance is inspiring .

Saw this on PBS before I started working for Celebrity Cruises in 2007. Hoped that I could visit his cabin but was clearly no where near it since we visited the inside passage route. Bucket list item to get there and see his paradise with my own two eyes.

I just imagine him setting up his camera and then doing his daily chores and then going back to turn the camera off. He was the first of his kind as far as videotaping his life.
