MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries throws players into the brutal BattleTech universe as a rising mercenary commander piloting towering BattleMechs across the war-torn Inner Sphere. Combining first-person mech combat with mercenary company management, the game tasks players with building a lance of customizable machines, hiring pilots, negotiating contracts, and surviving massive battlefield engagements filled with explosive destruction and tactical warfare. Whether fighting alone or with friends in co-op, every mission balances raw firepower, heat management, armor positioning, and strategic loadouts, giving each mech encounter the feel of a heavy industrial war machine slugging it out across cities, deserts, and hostile worlds.
The new Chaos Reign DLC expands the conflict dramatically by pushing the timeline forward after the Clan invasion and the truce of Tukayyid. Players once again step into the role of Commander Jake Mason as political assassinations, ComStar betrayals, and renewed faction wars threaten to plunge the Inner Sphere into chaos. The expansion introduces a cinematic campaign, new Guerrilla Warfare missions, expanded star maps, Battle Armor infantry, fresh vehicles, and a huge roster of new BattleMechs and OmniMechs including the Sunder, Bushwacker, Kodiak, Ebon Jaguar, Night Gyr, and Linebacker. Chaos Reign also adds advanced weapons like Arrow IV artillery, MRM launchers, and Clan-tech lasers, giving veterans even more destructive ways to dominate the battlefield while deepening the late-era BattleTech experience with larger-scale warfare and more advanced mech customization.

By the time Ashes and Ascension kicks off in 3058, Mason's mercenary company has grown from a single ragged lance into a massive, regiment-sized private army.
In BattleTech lore it seems that the leaders of regiment-sized mercenary outfits (like Jaime Wolf or Grayson Death Carlyle) hold the rank of Colonel. Since Mason is essentially the CEO of his own PMC, he doesn't need a House Lord to give him an official military promotion. He just had the dress uniform tailored and pinned himself as Colonel to look the part. If you're going to sit at the Star League table with Victor Steiner-Davion and Anastasius Focht to negotiate a massive contract for Operation Bird Dog, I guess it's the way PGI's Narrative Director wanted it.
And it might come full circle as Mason is promised De Berry should he survives in this next entry.
