1945. World War II is over, but another war is beginning, one to be fought between embassies, secret services, double agents, encrypted documents, and clandestine operations. In the early years of the Cold War, some members of the Soviet bloc's intelligence services made an extremely dangerous decision: to defect and hand over their secrets to the enemy.

Together with Mariano Méndez Rudilla, we begin a new series dedicated to espionage defectors during the Cold War. In this first installment, we travel from 1945 to 1950, the years in which the former alliance against Hitler rapidly transformed into a confrontation between the Western powers and the Soviet Union.

Istanbul, Berlin, Vienna, Ottawa, Tokyo, Stockholm, Budapest, London, and Rome became the stages for a secret war. The document that serves as the basis for the program includes numerous cases linked to the Soviet intelligence services—NKVD/KGB and GRU, in their terminology—and, at the end of the period, to the Albanian SIGURIMI, while on the other side appear the OSS, the newly created CIA, the British MI6, and the Canadian RCMP.

We will learn the stories of agents who decided to change sides, some seeking protection in the West and others paying a terrible price for trying. Among them are cases like those of Konstantin Dmitriyevich Volkov in Istanbul and Igor Gruzenko in Ottawa, along with many other names now practically forgotten.

Why did a spy defect? How did the first contact with the enemy service occur? What information could they offer to prove they were telling the truth? How was a defector protected? What happened to their family? And how far would the Soviet services go to locate those they considered traitors?

We will also witness the transformation of the American intelligence apparatus: the OSS disappeared in 1945 and the CIA was born in September 1947, precisely as the confrontation between the former allies took on an increasingly global dimension.

This is the story of the men and women who crossed one of the most dangerous borders of the Cold War: the one that separated a secret service from its enemy.
