The Hound of the Baskervilles[1] or Sherlock Holmes and the Hound of the Baskervilles[2] is a 1939 film directed by Sidney Lanfield, based on the novel The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle.
It is the first in a successful series starring Basil Rathbone (Sherlock Holmes) alongside Nigel Bruce (Dr. Watson), which spanned fourteen films over eight years. It is also notable as the first Sherlock Holmes film to be set in the Victorian era of the original stories: all previous Holmes film adaptations, including the 1930 British film series starring Arthur Wontner, had been updated to a contemporary setting by the time of the film's release.
