In the 1970s, the construction of the Rodovia dos Imigrantes (Immigrants Highway) required engineers to overcome the steep slopes of the Serra do Mar mountain range using pillars up to 80 meters high and tunnels excavated inside the mountain.
The descending lane of the system features 44 viaducts and 11 tunnels along its 58.5 km, crossing the Serra do Mar State Park and preserved Atlantic Forest vegetation.
Unlike the conventional method applied to the Rodovia Anchieta (Anchieta Highway), the width of the lanes was limited to only 40 meters to protect the steep terrain.
During the foundations, the Grotão Viaduct required drilling 30% deeper than planned due to unforeseen geological variations.
