Summer Marz Karz BMW Z1 custom

The BMW Z1 is one of BMW's most unusual and innovative sports cars. Produced between 1989 and 1991, the Z1 was developed by BMW Technik as a showcase for new ideas and engineering concepts. Its most famous feature was its vertically retracting doors, which disappeared down into the sills, allowing drivers to cruise with the doors lowered. With just 8,000 examples built, the Z1 became the first model in BMW's now-famous Z-car roadster lineage and remains a cult classic among enthusiasts today.

As for this Summer Marz Karz BMW Z1, information is surprisingly scarce. The model appears to have been part of the obscure Summer Marz Karz range of inexpensive diecasts produced in China during the 1980s and early 1990s, but I've been unable to find any detailed history about either the casting or the company itself. If you know anything about Summer Marz Karz, I'd love to hear from you in the comments!

My particular example had almost immaculate paint yet had suffered severe damage. The windscreen surround had been squashed almost completely flat, although thankfully the clear window plastic itself had escaped unscathed. After carefully straightening the frame, I gave the model a complete makeover. The original yellow and orange colour scheme was stripped away and replaced with red, the Z1's most popular and recognisable colour. I also swapped the original wheels for a set of seven-spoke rims. They're not the most accurate match for a real Z1, but they look far better than what the model started with and help complete the transformation.
