My neighbor has a pitbull. He had just moved in next door. I'm retired and noticed that he was gone all day from 7:30 to 5:15. I felt so bad for the dog so I offered to take his pup for a walk. M-F when my neighbor is at work, I make sure every day to go get his dog and take him for a long walk. His dog is so happy to see me. He pees and poops and is over the moon being outside.

My husband and I have had dogs for 55 to 60 years, and 8 dogs since 1987. We made the mistake with our first Saint Bernard of putting his food next to his water. One day we realized that his food got moldy. Ever after that his food was elevated and moved far from his water. We had another Saint who was born with his halo, and we didn't have him neutered (based on advice from our vet who has over 50 years of experience). Also, based on her counsel we never had any of their dewclaws removed. He lived for 12 years and 2 months and died of old age. We're VERY careful not to over-feed our dogs. I never used scents in the house other than an occasional spray of Lysol in a well-ventilated area. In addition, we've always lived in very old homes. They were not as tightly built as newer homes and as such, odors dissipate very quickly. Depending on the breed and time of the year, we've given then fresh water up to 25 times a day. There were times when we had only one dog, and we walked them for miles at pretty much the same time every day. None of our dogs have ever been caged, and all of our 6 Saints generally preferred to sleep on bare floors. Indeed, one of them slept on an A/C vent most of the summer. Now I'm 71 and my husband is 78. Neither of us can walk very far. However, 2 years and 5 months ago we adopted a "bonded pair" from a local shelter. They had been in a kill shelter and spent a year in our local shelter. They were so skittish when they came to our house, that they slept outside for 10 days. FINALLY they came inside and have the run of the house. We have very thick (expensive) carpeting in the living room, dining room, and one bedroom. We also have many throw rugs and the female sleeps on those. At night she curls up in a small wing chair, and the male sleeps with me on my bed. We have a good-sized fenced in yard, and they never have to "hold it" very long. Therefore, they get plenty of exercise running around together. They've only had about 4 "accidents" in the house---and it was when the male had diarrhea. We never scold them when they're sick. The female was a little too heavy when we brought her home but has slimmed down. We felt particularly sorry for her because she has a noticeable scar on one of her back legs when she must have been caught in a trap. In an attempt to free herself, she lost 2 lower molars on each side trying to free herself. We're still trying to break her of the habit of chewing on furniture, so I need to coat the legs of the dining room chairs again soon with Vick's Vapor Rub. We tried Tabasco sauce in the past, but we don't want to stain our expensive carpeting. Whereas may of our Saints were left alone for many hours, that doesn't happen anymore because even though my husband works full time, I work part-time from home. Yes, ALL of our dogs were spoiled but we never had children so they're our kids and we've love ALL of our dogs to death. I hope our experience helps others.

No.1 really hit me — now I finally understand why my friend takes his dog out 3 times a day. That’s also why he won’t work overtime… 3 PM sharp, he goes home because he knows “holding it” isn’t just inconvenient — it’s uncomfortable and stressful for them. 🐾💛

This really made me rethink what “safe at home” actually means… some of these risks never even crossed my mind. 🐶

@user-fx1bf4rt9m 8 months ago

Vets thought they helped with digestion and reduced neck/joint strain.
However, more recently a significant study linked raised bowls to a higher risk (potentially double) of bloat in large breeds, suggesting they cause dogs to eat faster and gulp more air, which leads to bloat. If you don't know what bloat is as a dog owner look into it. It is utterly terrifying.

Wow wow wow. I’ve made so many mistakes with my dogs in the past. I won’t make the same mistakes when I decide to get a new one thank you for sharing

What the hell is an "indoor" dog? All dogs should live inside with their owners.

Years ago, I had a dog the same thing with the furniture, and I put a bubble wrap around the legs all my furniture that had legs had bubble wrap on them…. She didn’t bother the legs with the bubble wrap.

I had a Bichon Frise,mhe was with me for 19 years. Two things he got in abundance was fresh clean water, not tap, and a walk he wanted to do. I would open the door and let him pick where he wanted to go. 15 minutes or an hour, his choice. He liked to sniff every single blade of grass he came across. I jade sure he was happy. Bark Park twice axweek when I got home. Yes, he was fixed and chipped as well. So was my cat.

Putting the water bowl near their food and then bring cold in the house is what surprised me the most. I have always turned the heat down cause I thought their coats would make them hot in the house. Thank you for sharing vital information to us. I try to be a good dog mom

Hello from New Hampshire- My horses taught me not to treat them like humans. The same with dogs. I have waited until I retired to plan for a puppy. We had farm dogs, but I want a companion. Now I have the time to devote. I have ordered reliable books to get me started. My friend has a doggy day care. She and I are looking onto getting Mini Labradoodles from the same litter. Mine will be spayed and get all its necessary shots. If I have to travel, I can leave " Molly" with her sister at day care. She won't be alone. I need the dog to walk me! So we will be going out for regular exercise. Resting or sleeping the couch is allowed. I have asthma so I am careful regarding scents or strong cleaners. We both need to be healthy and enjoy life.
