In March 2007, a 22-year-old English teacher in Tokyo failed to show up for class. The only clue was a note left by a stranger, and when police knocked on his apartment door, he fled barefoot.
Lindsay Ann Hawker had been teaching English in Japan for less than six months, having left for England. A tutoring session at a café near Gyotoku station seemed perfectly normal until she accompanied a student home to collect tuition fees and instructed a taxi driver to wait downstairs. The taxi waited for a long time, but eventually left.
Then followed a 31-month manhunt across Japan, approximately 8,000 tips from the public, and a face on a poster that gradually faded from recognition. In this video, we retrace the Lindsay Ann Hawker case, from her fourth-floor apartment in Ichikawa to the Nanko ferry terminal in Osaka.
