1) The over the head piece, instead of being a long rectangle with the center fold at the top of the head, was originally a square folded in half...with the edges of the fabric seamed to create the side and back of the hood and the face opening created by cutting a slit in the center fold of it and hemming the slit edges back. So strange, but does totally work.
2) Along the top edge are several extra rows of stitching that end up quilting together the top and stiffening it. This makes it so instead of flopping down over the curve of the head, it holds itself out and works really well as a brim to keep the rain and sun off.
3) The ties on the center of the hood's sides (placed right over the ears) let you either tie it closer around the chin to keep nice and cozy in the cold, or (my favorite) they can tie around the back of the head, and they actually serve to give the hood some shape and let it move with you when you turn your head.
Fascinating features, but also they add complexity, and it's lovely to have a super-simple pattern that just does what it needs to do. :)
