How Is It THIS HARD To Make a Good Spawn Movie?

JoBlo Originals

Spawn looks friggin awesome, the lore is insane, and the potential for an incredible R-rated horror movie is off the charts. So why has bringing him to the big screen been such a nightmare? We’re talking about the history of Spawnie, the 1997 movie, the frustrations of getting Spawn right, and why Al Simmons deserves another shot.

The animated series definitely needs to continue.

I grew up in Tempe, AZ and Todd still lives 45mins from my place. Me and all my friends worshipped Spawn. The comics, the toys, the movie, and when we read in the fine print the headquarters was in out area. We felt like Todd was our Stan Lee.

I will always love Spawn and Todd as an Arizonian.

The only reason to watch this is John Leguizamo. Its otherwise a worse version of The Crow.

I remember when the movie came out, I went to see it with my father. I knew very little about Spawn, and my poor father knew nothing about him.

We came out of the theater after it was over, looked at each other, and we were both like "What was that?"

Since then I've softened to it, but still wouldn't mind a redo.

Fun Fact: Wesley Snipes, Cuba Gooding Jr., Snoop Dogg, Tony Todd, Allen Payne, Denzel Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, Ving Rhames, Tupac Shakur, LL Cool J, Hakim Alston and Will Smith were each originally considered for the role of Al Simmons/Spawn.

The makeup on Leguizamo should have won an award

What’s insane to me is that the first dozen or so issues of the comic tells a complete arc that is captivating, sweeping, and cinematic. They could easily just do a straight adaptation of that run and it would work great as a movie!

"How Is It THIS HARD To Make a Good Spawn Movie?" The same could be said for a Silent Hill movie, or a Resident Evil movie (Maybe the latest one is okay, haven't seen it yet). It's not that it's hard. It's that the filmmakers that get to work on these projects think they know better than the source material.

When I was a kid they had a write-in contest suggesting casting for the movie. Danny Devito was (and still is) my pick for Violator. I still have the nice, glossy, signed by Todd Spawn #41 they mailed me around here somewhere.

It is worth noting that an early idea was to have Jessica Priest (Melinda Clarke) return as a She-Spawn in the third act, but it was thrown out when they realized they didn't have the budget to make it so. The idea would happen years later in the comics, where she now leads the hellspawn strike force called The Scorched, and is actually an ally to Al Simmons.
