This "In-Depth Analysis" series delves into notable university ekiden teams through video interviews. This time, we're focusing on Soka University, which finished third in last year's Izumo Ekiden, demonstrating its potential to win one of the three major ekiden races. We spoke with five people—coaches and athletes—about the team's current situation and their individual visions for the future.
First up is head coach Kazuki Enoki. The coach discusses the abilities of Riki Koike, who has grown into a true ace; the underlying strength of Shoki Yamaguchi, who couldn't fully demonstrate his abilities in the Hakone Ekiden; the high potential of the promising rookies with 5000m times in the 13-minute range; and their goals for this season.
