It doesn't matter that I've watched the movie 20 times. I still find myself hoping that Red makes it to Mexico to find his friend and I proceed to sob my eyes out when he does.
It is Red's story, he's recounting it through his narration. Andy always had hope and Red had none. Andy essentially saved Red from turning into Brooks.
Not ashamed to say, tears stream down my face pretty much every time I watch Red ceremoniously wipe the dirt off that tin, then open it to read Andy’s letter beckoning him to “come a little further”. Shawshank Redemption is a story about perseverance to finding salvation, and nothing could be more beautiful than Red’s parting words, “I hope”.
Sidebar, if anyone reading this doesn’t know: Shawshank is of course based on a Stephen King short story. The character Brooks was originally only mentioned in passing, but Frank Darabont filled him out to serve as a major plot device: being that prison is more a state of mind than walls, and the poor guy couldn’t escape his mental incarceration. Get busy living or get busy dying, indeed. ✊
Greatest line: "Get busy livin', or get busy dyin'". I tear up when I think about this line since it applies to everyone when adversity gets a bit much.
Everything about this movie is perfection. Naturally Stephen King’s beautifully written story drives the film. Add to that some amazing performances - not just by the two leading actors but also all the characters. Then add a stunning and haunting Thomas Newman soundtrack. Finally add outstanding cinematography. Have I missed anything?
I've always loved Red's last lines, "I hope to see my friend & shake his hand, I hope the Pacific is as blue as it's been in my dreams, I hope..." Red had lost hope for anything a long time ago, Andy gave it back to him! It is a beautiful story of 2 friends who met in unusual circumstances.
Jeez I’ve never seen a video in my recommended with this little views. It just shows that well made movie essays can range from 55 views to 10s of millions without much difference in quality
The redemption in the title itself was 100% about Red. So many movies wind up getting their endings wrong, either too sappy, too awkward, or too cliche. The ending for this masterpiece was perfection itself, incredibly satisfying.
Many movie buffs and crtics deny having Shawshank as their all time favourite movie because they don't want to appear as mainstream, they want to pretend to be deeper and more sophisticated than the general public. Kudos for you to not fall into this shallow mindness and making this awesome video. I highly enjoyed it.
A granny in Australia says...this is a superbly constructed homage to the best ever film. And a well deserved homage it is too. Over many years it has been my privilege to ensure that MANY young friends and relatives saw it as essential viewing. Congratulations and thanks, peace and love.
