Most people torture themselves with long runs to lose fat, but there are methods that are almost twice as effective and gentler on your joints. Many novice runners give up in frustration because the scale won't budge or their knees give out – often because they mistakenly equate sweat and shortness of breath with success. But how does our fat metabolism really work? Why does classic jogging often not deliver the gold medal for weight loss, and what scientifically sound alternatives fit much better into a busy daily life?

Fat metabolism vs. calorie consumption: High intensity doesn't automatically mean more fat loss. While brisk walking derives about 80% of its energy from fat reserves, this percentage often drops to 40% or less during fast jogging due to the high heart rate, as the body instead relies on readily available carbohydrate stores (glycogen).
Benefits of everyday movement: Brisk walking releases less of the stress hormone cortisol, which can inhibit fat loss. Just 1,000 extra steps a day reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by 12%, and only 20 minutes of extra walking per week can lead to approximately 1.5 kg of pure fat loss in 12 weeks.
The wonder weapon: Swimming: Training in the water engages almost every major muscle group simultaneously. Furthermore, thermoregulation significantly increases the basal metabolic rate, as the body has to expend a lot of energy to maintain its core temperature against the cooler water. At the same time, the water reduces stress on the joints by up to 80%.
Myth of the afterburn effect: The afterburn effect of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) is often greatly overestimated and, in experiments, burned only 40–50 extra calories after 20 minutes of sprinting. Sprints also carry a high risk of injury for beginners and place a significant strain on the nervous system.
Efficient incline walking: Walking on a treadmill with an incline of 6% to 10% alters biomechanics and burns approximately 50% to 60% more calories at the same speed than walking on a flat surface, because the body weight has to be moved against gravity.
Muscles as powerhouses: One kilogram of muscle mass burns about three times as many calories at rest as one kilogram of fat tissue.
