Sony A7S IV Might FINALLY Be Coming… Everything We Know So Far

The Sony A7S IV might finally be coming.

It’s been over six years since Sony launched the A7S III, a camera that completely changed the game for video shooters and became one of Sony’s most popular filmmaking cameras.

Now, with the launch of the Sony FX5 and a mysterious new Sony camera registered under the code WW261362, speculation around the long-awaited A7S IV is starting to heat up.

In this video, I’m breaking down everything we know so far about the potential Sony A7S IV, including the possibility of it sharing technology with the FX5, what a fully stacked sensor could mean, 5K recording, Open Gate, 4K high frame rates, autofocus, low-light performance, EVF improvements and whether Sony would leave internal RAW exclusive to the FX5.

I also take a look back at the relationship between the A7S III and FX3 and ask whether Sony could be about to do something very similar with the FX5 and A7S IV.

Nothing regarding the A7S IV has been officially confirmed by Sony at this stage, so some of the specifications discussed in this video are based on current rumours, reports and my own predictions about what I’d personally like to see from the camera.

If Sony gets this one right, this could genuinely be the camera I’ve been waiting for.

2:13 not latitude but dynamic range. Not the same. 11 stops measured latitude, up to 14 stops DR with a SNR of 2

Won’t the a7s4 be the same price as the fx5 minus the audio handle price?

Are we sure Sony is coming out with another A7S camera? Six years is a long time and the average between alpha cameras is 3 years. The only reason Sony releases an A7S IV now is because they see a compelling business reason. I don’t see them selling a lot of these but if the price is high enough they might try. The A7S III is basically the same price as the FX3 so maybe they use the FX5 sensor and price it in that same $5,000 USD range. And actually, the FX5 with removable EVF is closer to $5,600 so all they have to do is keep the standard EVF, add 32 bit float internally, charge $5,000 USD, obviously have all the same video specs as the FX5 and people feel like they are saving $1,600 USD since the FX5 with 32 bit float (top handle required) and EVF + taxes in the USA brings it close to $6,600 USD. Not to mention it would be way better weather sealed for dusty or rainy environments. That definitely appeals to a group of shooters who will pay a premium to be able to shoot almost anywhere anytime.

It's unfortunate for the A7SIV that the A7RVI and A7V exist with 66,8 and 33 megapixels. If the A7SIV features that 66,8 mp config AND takes photos, the A7RVI will be obsolete. If it has the A7V 33 mp sensor it better have all video resolutions unlocked and something special to justify a higher price. If it has the FX5 sensor, they (in my opinion) must implement a great pixel shift feature for photos to generate 66,4 mp images uit of the 16,6 mp sensor. I mean the S1II generates great 96mp photo handheld. The FX5 sensor is much faster and with a next level image processor it will be even better. 16,6 mp photos for expensive top tier hybrid camera just won't do i think. Especially if the video side is bottlenecked not to compete with the FX5.
