I have wanted to see this film for a long time. It deserves all the praise it has received and more. Raj Kapoor considered it his masterpiece, and it certainly qualifies, but his fans at the time preferred the “dashing, irresistible lady killer “ they loved from his earlier roles. But truth told, nothing Raj Kapoor touched was less than pure gold! ❤

R.K Films Mera Naam Joker (1970). A film which is more or less the autobiography of Showman Raj Kapoor (1924-1988), the Charlie Chaplin of Indian cinema. Ranbir Raju becomes a joker (clown) more or less like his late father. His mother wants him to be educated & respected in society- someone who holds his head up high, while he has ambitions to follow in his father’s footsteps. From his schooldays he also appears as a joker in order to pay his school fees. He was the teacher/ staff’s pet. While attempting to pay his school fees he gets expelled. He sees his teacher (whom he has a crush on) get betrothed (fiancée/ married) to David, who teaches him that God is the ultimate joker-he does everything for everyone in the world 🌎 🗺️ & nothing for himself. Raju gets himself into a pickle while trying to obtain employment with Sher Singh (Dara Singh) & Mahendra and Gemini Circus. He eventually becomes an entertainer in the circus- a singing clown. 🤡 He develops a crush on the main attraction of the Russian artists- Marina, who shows him that all jokers are philosophers- they teach you about life. In the third chapter (the climax & conclusion of the film), he is retired & meets with Meena (alias Meenu Master)- Padmini. She has a job of putting up billboards, but her desire is to be a model, artist & entertainer herself. She works with Raju first as a circus act, later on in a stage act- singing Qawwalis & doing stage shows I.e. Heer Ranjha (Romeo & Juliet). Eventually she comes in contact with Mr. Kumar (Rajendra Kumar) a film producer who shows her the ropes- how to wear a sari 🥻, model clothes, how to carry yourself. She eventually takes some photographs & becomes a fashion model. The introduction & conclusion starts and ends with Raju’s final performance with Gemini Circus. 🎪 Six years in the making, Raj Kapoor staked his personal fortune into Mera Naam Joker, also mortgaging his house. Unfortunately when it was released December 18,1970, it was a flop- putting Raj Kapoor into a financial strain. It wasn’t until the release of the Romeo & Juliet starter Bobby (1973) that he was back in top form. He said in an interview “Mera Naam Joker (1970) didn’t go down well with the people”. Beautiful haunting melodies & music by Shankar Jaikishan, “Jeena Yahan Marna Yahan Iske Siwa Jana Kahan”, “Kehta Hai Joker” & “Jane Kahan Gaye Woh Din” rendered beautifully by Mukesh Chand Mathur (1923-1976), the “voice” of Raj Kapoor for 30 years. Manna Dey (1919-2013) was awarded the Filmfare Award 🏆 for Best Male Playback Singer for “Aye Bhai Zara Dekhe Chalo”. 50+ years later and Mera Naam Joker (1970) is not only a classic of Hindi cinema, it finally gets the recognition it deserved from the beginning. This was the beginning of Rishi Kapoor’s (1952-2020) career in films, he played the younger version of his father’s character.
