The Future of YouTube is Not Videos. It’s Your IP.

YouTube doesn’t just want your videos anymore. It wants your shows. But do you need to become MrBeast to build something that lasts? No.

In this episode, I’ll show you what creator IP really means, how to own your show, and why it creates demand for your business well beyond the algorithm.

Hi, I’m Daryn. I’m a Writers Guild Award-winning creator and producer who helps founders, entrepreneurs, and creators like you apply storytelling techniques to your business so you can build a brand people want to binge.

Welcome to Story Caffeine, where we turn random videos into bingeable shows. If you’re doing the work of a television network — developing ideas, producing, packaging, promoting — what are you building that actually belongs to you? Your creator IP: a unique perspective expressed through a recognizable format that builds a trusted relationship and creates proven demand for something you own.

In this video: what it means to own your show, how Alexandra Gater turned Studio Fix into tens of millions of views plus a book, marketplace, and studio, why organizing videos into seasons isn’t enough, and the one question to ask to start building your asset now. Until next time, keep creating and keep thinking like a showrunner.

Building shows now? Cripes, I think YouTube has lost its origins. Hollywood is corrupt; it shouldn't be in the same sentence as YouTube.

IP forms are Copyrights, Trademarks, and Patents. You MUST register all forms of IP to get full lawful protection, and that costs. Do your research and understand all the IP forms and the laws governing them. Do NOT trust YouTube'ers, trust yourself and file and protect all you IP's.

I think it's finally going in the direction it needs to go. Appreciate your continued focus on these developments.

It's been a minute since I've been able to sit & breathe & enjoy one of your amazing videos!! I'm taking all of your ideas & trying my best to make it work on the platform, so I've been hustling it. 😆

I guess this also works for the "Company as the brand" and not YOU. You had that person on i forget her name that put the company first instead of herself.

You are right about this, and i'm definitely on board. i have some things in the playlist that i'm converting over to shows and it's actually easier than I thought it would be. i have a channel where I talk about comics, but I talk about pop culture from a black nerd lens.So i'm developing I p around all of that infrastructure, so i'm not just limited to comics

This content connected the dots for me.

The algorithm found me and connected what I want to accomplish with your insight on how to get it done.

Thank you.

Hey Daryn, another great video. This video that you have done has validated what I am trying to do with Legacy Chronicles. I would say, IP is the new currency.

By the way your writing techniques that you have shared have increased my views and subscribers. I am now at 50 subscribers.

It's about time, bring down the walls. Nice coverage Daryn, message received. I started down this path back when Leased Access was introduced.

I am a professional video editor and thumbnail designer. Really enjoyed watching this insightful, forward-thinking, and strategic media business video from Daryn Strauss breaking down why the future of YouTube isn't just about random viral videos anymore, but rather about building "Creator IP" (Intellectual Property), developing recognizable formats, shifting from algorithm-chasing to showrunning, and owning an asset that outlasts platform changes!

The pacing during the discussion of the evolution of YouTube into television, the difference between a broad topic vs. unique creator IP, practical examples like Alexandra Gator (Studio Fix), building trusted audience relationships, and thinking like a showrunner is engaging, exceptionally smart, and very professional. Also, clipping some of the highlights on creator economy trends, digital showrunning, and building brand assets into YouTube Shorts would definitely help grab more creator, media business, and entrepreneurship audiences.

I am a professional video editor and thumbnail designer, and I have created a custom thumbnail for you that I am willing to share. Please let me know your best contact method so I can send it over!

I’m currently watching The Morning Show on Apple TV, this could be a great case study for your channel as well ❤

All of this sounds wonderful, and makes a lot of sense. But it's absolute bullshit until YouTube gives starting-from-zero-creators access to the SHOWS features. IT IS NOT DOING THAT. It's locking the feature behind YPP, or "slowly rolling out..." whatever corporates speak you can think of. It seems that -- in reality -- Youtube is becoming a gate keeper, reserving its best features and algorithmic juice for those creators it hand picks. Prove me wrong.

I'm trying to become a stop motion animator, the only reason I haven't started properly is because I'm practicing

With the way you describe IP it sounds lot like personal branding, which has already been a thing on YouTube for a long time. (There's probably nuance I'm missing.) From what I'm seeing lately, the main way to make money on YouTube seems to be coaching other people on how to do YouTube. Not unlike how during the Gold Rush the people who made money weren't the ones digging/panning for gold, it was the merchants selling the supplies and the saloons. Either that or being a salesperson for other brands. I hate that there's this push to make everything more produced and about sales rather than the focus being on someone's actual message or sharing their interest. Not everyone wants to be a TV producer, writer, and actor. Stupid YouTube and stupid capitalism. /rant (Apologies to this creator.)

I understand YT wanting Binge Watchers and content to fulfill that. But I'm not sure it's gonna take off. I guess the question is; if this idea is successful enough for YT to keep pushing it, how is this going to effect all the other Non Episodic content? It's not really practical to think that it's ALL going to go in that direction or that creators are going to even want to jump in this pond. KWIM? While this might be a good opportunity for some, I feel like YT is going to be business a usual for the majority of creators. Bear in mind: I'm just speculating.. Thanks for the coverage Daryn!

This means YouTube only wants rich people. Who else can afford all this. Corporate sponsorship. The days of the little guy turning on a camera is over.
