Hi friends, I've been a little under the weather the last couple of weeks, so I wanted to make something slow and cozy instead of my usual studio vlog. Come and sit with me while I flip through some of the books I've been loving lately, art books that are shaping my Masters research, alongside a small collection of antique volumes I've been gathering for years.
The antique books connect me directly to Louisa Anne Meredith, the nineteenth century writer and artist at the centre of my research. Holding a book she once held, turning pages that carry her actual words in print, has become one of the most meaningful parts of researching a real historical person. I found my first volume, The Romance of Nature, when I was just beginning to learn who she was, and I've added to the collection slowly ever since, including a few special finds from a second-hand bookshop in Tasmania during my residency there.
Alongside those, I'm sharing the contemporary books I keep returning to while writing my latest exegesis chapter titled ‘Pressed’, on herbariums, colonial plant collecting, and the artists working with those histories today. Plus I’m sharing the reference books that have helped me place my own practice within the wider story of Australian art. And because I've been sinking deeper into painting the Australian landscape lately, I've included the books on colour and Country that I go back to again and again, including two contemporary artists whose work I love more than almost anyone else's- Belinda Fox and Mary Tonkin.
I'd love to know in the comments if any of these books or artists resonate with you, or if you have a recommendation for me, I always go and look things up after reading the comments.
