Can we now still safely say (some) hadith are 100% reliably traceable back to the prophet or not (especially hadith that deals with laws or advice that will take a huge courage to follow and goes against common sense but since the prophet said it, we must follow)? How do we know as a laymen? Since scholars can quote this hadith and the audience has no say in the matter.

I have always tried to be open minded to hear many perspectives but have always end up been disappointed with Browns perspective becoz he tends not to address the actually main argument or steel man the argument but brings up minor peripheral issues or straw man the main argument. The historical method is a scientific historical and objective method that can be applied to any ancient books. It has been applied to ancient literature as well as religious books and documents as well as dating of books. So Islam cannot claim exception to this method. I find it odd that Browns argument is that all criticism of Islam face the topic is because of Western biases. This really isn’t the kind of academic quality he should be capable of. Besides he should also know that the ‘critical’ method does not mean criticise but to critic (evaluate the reliable and unreliable) and not so much to determine what’s the truth of Scripture. The really oddest thing here is he spending so much time talking about Greek and Christian interpretation rather than actually discuses his criticism of the historical critical method regarding Islam itself.
Judaism and Christianity have their own view of the historical critical method and have embraced the usefulness of it because truth should not contradict faith. Faith and truth should go hand and hand.
It’s seems Browns mistake here is to assume that all Jews and Christian have always assume the literal understanding of scriptures all throughout.
Besides Judaism and Christianity research do not fear the historical critical method at all and have actually gained a lot from the historical critical method eg which are more authentic or reliable sources and help place dating. So is it wise for those who are religious continue to bury our heads in the sand and choose to ignore what science and history can shed light on tradition or hearsay’s? I just don’t find Brown consistent his approach nor neutral.
The problem of Ayesha's marriage age is that if she was 9 years old, as these non-prophetic narrations report, this contradicts the Qur'anic instruction to reserve such a union for mature women per Surah al-Nisa', Ayat 3-6. In other words, because Ayesha was a minor the Prophet wouldn't and couldn't marry her for this reason. And Abu Bakr couldn't and wouldn't contract his pre-pubescent daughter to marry the Prophet similarly so.
Your lecture is about poor academic approach and bias , unfortunately your lecture was exactly that , too general , I watch many lectures by academics regarding this subject they are very specific and respectful and have a clear knowledge on a specific aspect of history / religion / Islam / language , go back to basics my friend and don't start lecturers saying I'm going to rush through a 100 subjects
