3:05 the typo is partially due to this being a fan translation since the snes version was japanese exclusive

@Sianostrakarenrenren 3 months ago

Far from worst, it's a classic.

4:25 Yes, her name is Jennifer Simpson in the Japanese version (Jontron was playing an unofficial fan translation for this video).
In fact, her name is Jennifer because her appearance was copied from Jennifer Connelly in the 1985 movie Phenomena, where her character in that was also named Jennifer.

This game has multiple endings, and it's basically impossible to get the true ending and uncover most of the story on your first playthrough. You have to go through it many times to learn what is happening. There's a lot more to it than just a girl being chased by a scissor-wielding maniac.

Hell yeah, have been waiting for this one!

If you ever wanna try this game out for yourself, btw, it's been rereleased on Switch and other current consoles under the title Clock Tower Rewind with an official translation (Jon played a fan translation via emulator for this video, the only way to play it in English prior to Rewind) and a bunch of nice QoL adjustments like save states and much faster movement speed! It was released on Halloween of 2024 in anticipation of the game's 30th anniversary the following year! :3

The first Clock Tower game on the SNES was heavily inspired by the Dario Argento movie Phenomena, which starred a young Jennifer Connelly. It's where the game's Jennifer's name and appearance came from. The second game in the series, which released for the PS1 (and was just called Clock Tower in the west), was the only true sequel that continued the first game's story, as the other sequels were completely unrelated. However a very good successor to the series was 2005's Haunting Ground on the PS2, which was also one of the games that happened to be a byproduct of the development cycle for Resident Evil 4, where they tried lots of different things that spun off into their own titles when they were scrapped (this is also how Devil May Cry and RE Dead Aim were created).

This one wasnt released outside of japan until the recent version on current consoles so back then the one on ps1 was the "first" game for us even though chronologically it takes place after this one. Also not to be confused with clocktower "Ghost Head" on the same system which was just a spinoff.

There's more of the game. I believe Scissorman & the giant blob monster are brothers. Jennifer's name & design is based on Jennifer Connelly in the movie Phenomena, the game designer is or was a huge fan of director Dario Argento, who made great movies like Phenomena, the original version of Suspiria, Inferno, Deep Red & Tenebre/Tenebrae 🙂

14:48 that's bobby (the Scissorman) 's twin brother dan. The giant monster is actually like a cocoon, his real body is inside.

Clock Tower could have been way up there with like Resident Evil and Silent Hill. It looked like it had a lot of potential. Where as Resident Evil was originally like a Mad House haunted hiuse experience with a crap load of zombies and especially fixed camera angles and very tight controls made the horro experience way too immersed and scared outta my mind. Even though I have seent many playthroughs about the Remake and original playthroughs, it still something else when you yourself have to play those types of games. Silent Hill is like that and the old classic trope of:"Where the hell do I go?" in this game?! Silent hill akso has the trope of:"Oh great I can't find any items and literally have no idea where I am or going?"

so clock tower doors in fact have a lot more story than jon talked about, and that's likely intentional.

at the time, this game was still rather obscure, still somewhat is (often getting overlooked in the history of early survival horror) so jon likely didn't want to spoil the game. plus his videos don't really need to cover the narrative to still be entertaining.

but yeah, the game does have an actual story

"Just a simple plank of wood.
Who are you to judge?"

@Jobocan. 3 months ago

Actually Scissorman's name in the first game is Bobby. His brother is named Dan and he's the Scissorman in the sequel... Yeah for some reason there's multiple Scissormen (in 3 there's Jemima and Ralph). It's a good game though.

@slightlycynical4308 3 months ago

4:40 name is the same but spelled in katakana so technically in Japanese but phonetically pronounced in english

@Hayastantzi92 3 months ago

I've played my fair share of Survival horror games, in fact i do own Resident Evil 2 on Playstation, Resident Evil: Revelations (3DS) & Corpse Party: Blood Covered (3ds)

@Tinytube_Tenbucks 3 months ago

Jessica Simpson is her name in Japanese which is the only version of the game that exists, the game is set in Norway. Jon is playing a fan translation.
