On 21 October 2022, Jamie Benbow was stabbed in his own home in Handsworth Wood, Birmingham. He was 29, a month from his 30th birthday, and a dad to a little boy.
The two men who came through his door were strangers to him. They had never met him, never seen his face. But they knew his street, they knew which house, and they knew he was at home that night.
Somebody had told them. That somebody was drinking in the same pub as Jamie a few hours earlier — a man plenty of people took to be his friend.
This is the story of a robbery that took a few hundred pounds and a man's life, the CCTV that undid a careful alibi, and the question a Birmingham jury had to answer: can a man be a murderer in a house he never walked into?
In October 2023, Calvin McLeod, Jerome Christie and Ravelle Hutchinson were sentenced to life imprisonment at Birmingham Crown Court, with minimum terms totalling 79 years.

ABOUT THIS documentary

Every fact in this documentary is drawn from the sentencing remarks of His Honour Judge Francis Laird KC, the prosecution case at trial, statements from West Midlands Police and the Crown Prosecution Service, and the statements Jamie's family chose to make publicly. There is no invented dialogue. Where the public record is silent, the film says so rather than filling the gap.
Jamie's son is not named or pictured. The neighbours who tried to save his life are not identified. Defence arguments are included in full, because they were made in open court and because a case is only understood when both sides are heard.
All footage marked "Reconstruction" is recreated for illustrative purposes and is not real evidence or archive of these events.

JOIN THE DISCUSSION

One murder, three very different roles, one verdict. The man who struck the fatal blow. The man beside him. And the man who was never in the house. Should all three carry a murder conviction? Both arguments were made by real lawyers in a real courtroom. Tell us where you land in the comments.
