Only Bob Dylan could accidentally win a Nobel Prize and somehow make it feel like the most Dylan thing ever.

Possibly one of the greatest lyricists ever. The raw poetry of the words are music all by themselves.

This is how I write lyrics too. I start with a general concept and then vomit out page of unfiltered ideas. And then I pick out 3-4 most interesting lines and build off of that. I definitely recommend it.

So, it seems 'the greatest songwriting process of all time' is to not use the same process all the time.

It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) is extraordinary.
No-one has ever written anything like it before or since. Bob included.

I restrained myself for many long months and even years of watching a "How to Bob Dylan", but here you are clockbaiting me. I haven't listened to Bob for a while now, because I was too deep, 20 hours a day, playing his songs (mostly from memory) on my guitar, dissecting every word, every nuance from his discography, reading every book from him, about him, it was the greatest musical and literatural day of my life, when he received the award. He is the The Poet and The Songwriter I dedicated many years of my life to.

Bob Dylan is a poet who played around with the structure of music itself. It was his whole being and he expressed that so true to himself that he revealed the nature of time itself, just like his music, it’s never the same at two different moments.

I get goosebumps everytime A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall comes on.

Talking about cinematic songwriting and not mentioning 'Hurricane', I don't understand. Every single song on that album could be a movie by itself. It's my favourite Dylan album for sure.

For anyone who loves songwriting, I’d say it’s essential to dive deeply into Chico Buarque’s work. Of course, he doesn’t write in English, but it’s worth the effort: his music is a completely different universe from Dylan’s. The harmonies and melodies are far more intricate, the rhythmic play with language is mesmerizing, and the way lyrics and music intertwine is breathtaking. Where Dylan often works with stark imagery and raw poetry, Chico crafts entire narratives and emotional worlds within a single song. Exploring both gives you two radically different, yet equally profound, visions of what songwriting can be.

If Bob just wrote poetry, I’d have never known his genius.
I love his voice too 😊

This is one of the best 10 minutes I've spent on YouTube. Thank you for this video! I'm a (struggling) writer and love hearing about other writers' processes.

Great summarisation of Dylan's working processes.

2:16 colorized picture of  1963 Newport festival Dylan framed between Doc Watson and Judy Collins...good shot !

Girl of the North Country was based off an old old English ballad as well.

8:12 this is badass and idk why. That mm mm negative response is just so cool lol

Thumbs up from a die-hard!! Great video for the less initiated. Sadly, no revelations for me, but I'm glad it's out there to guide other Dylan fans and writers who haven't spent the past 50 years reading and listening to everything he's ever said.
A great primer on Dylan's creativity. Well done!

I bought my first Dylan album as a teenager. Now as a 65 yr old I am still listening to Dylan ... He has been an inspirational life-force for me.. His songs and music a constant companion throughout the various chapters of my life. You either get Dylan or you don't.

Wow! After all these years, to create a video about Dylan that is this eye-opening is quite an accomplishment! Well done!

Happy 84th Dylan! From a little part of North East of Himalayan hills :)
