Your Debt Is Their Asset and Proverbs Said It First

The Proverbs secret banks use to multiply their wealth is not a scheme, and it was never hidden. It is a habit of reading, and King Solomon wrote it down about three thousand years ago in Proverbs, chapter twenty, verse fourteen.

On the twenty-fifth of August the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation published a sentence describing household borrowing as loan growth, in a report meant to say that things are going well. The same obligation that sits on your kitchen table as a burden is entered on the other side of somebody else's ledger as an asset. Neither account is false.

In this study we open Proverbs 20:14 in the King James Version — "It is naught, it is naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth" — and read it beside the plain accounting of a modern loan, where the Federal Reserve's own G.19 release describes consumer credit as receivables carried on the balance sheet of the institution.

We look at King Solomon as a man who had actually stood inside the trade. First Kings, chapter ten, records a navy of Tharshish sailing with the navy of Hiram, horses and linen yarn brought out of Egypt, and prices named on the buying end. Then we set the industry net interest margin of 3.32 percent beside the way most of us were taught to wait for one large number that arrives once, and we close on Proverbs 20:15, the verse sitting directly underneath the first one.

No institution and no person is accused of anything here. Nobody lied, and there was no smoky room. The whole of it is published every quarter, and anyone can go and read it.
