Retired mechanic here,45 years in trade. Bottom line why is any of this needed. Did it provide better fuel economy? No. Did any of this make the engine more reliable? No. In the late 80s TBI came out, quickly followed by MPI. Both systems had timing control and  improved the performance and reliability of those engines. The TBI system had 4, maybe 5 sensors, easy system to understand and work on. The MPI system was slightly better but then added more sensors and more problems. Now needing tooling to diagnose. Now 45 years later you need 5 to 10,000 dollars of laptops and software to repair. Plus your going to need that mechanic that understands what he or she is looking at. And most shops if there lucky have one of them. Most have none. If you’re smart you’ll invest in a classic 1990-2000 and keep it stock. You can put 30,000 dollars in it and still be ahead

It would also be nice if these manufactures would stop putting in “features” consumers don’t want.

This is yet another example why everyone needs to work to keep older models with less technology on the road and resist the "technological advancements" that auto manufacturers are forcing on their customers.

I have two Silverados, a 2002, 1500 with 350000 miles on it. And a 2018 Sliverado, LTZ. This one has 130000 on it. I use 5w30 oil. But I am thinking I need to do the lifers. I am really bummed by all the care manufacturers screwing the public. But it is once again fxxking politicians that screwed this up.

Several decades ago, I learned through experience that with new symptoms/problems after repair usually are caused by something missed or done incorrectly by you the mechanic. Best lessons learned.

Most aftermarket programmers have a return to stock option. If you do not "uninstall" the aftermarket tune using the tuner before flashing the ECU it basically bricks the aftermarket tuner.

Good video. What could have occurred is when placing the camshaft actuator sprocket on the cam, the camshaft can slide towards the back of the engine a few millimeters. If you miss the lining up the camshaft dowel with the opening in the sprocket, it can FEEL like you are pushing the sprocket onto camshaft and it is sliding onto the dowel when in fact the whole camshaft is sliding backwards into the block slightly. There is a significant chance that the sprocket is just being held on with the friction of the bolt and the dowel is damaged and has also damaged the sprocket. I would avoid unnecessary engine run time until it is inspected! What I usually do is line the sprocket up as best as I can then approach the camshaft with the sprocket carefully not to touch the cam. The start the cam bolt a few threads to capture the cam from movement and pull it forward as far as it while come while simultaneously pushing the sprocket backwards onto the camshaft. Hope that makes sense and helps with finding the root cause.

Looking up the Camshaft replacement procedure. I see they request the cam acuator, reluctor be held with a zip-tie to keep the spring from
coming apart. I wonder if that step was skipped and the Cam Gear assembly came apart causing this Issue. And additional info found states the Actuator Bolt must be replaced after removal and who would reuse the Timing gear components ta 80 k miles? One thing for sure. They have the right Guy on the Job to figure this mess out.

Lifted truck, aftermarket tune, what could go wrong.

I just installed the full texas speed DOD delete kit on my 2016 silverado and it turned out to have a faulty VVT Fluid bolt (Cam Gear Bolt) brand new out of the kit. I contacted Texas speed and they already knew about the faulty bolt.  when you torque it down, the VVT plunger would lock solid and wouldn't move.  when you loosen it up, it frees back up.

You frightened the life out of me with the intro history so I'm going to take a Bex and have a good lie down 🤞
