There are many skills that go to make a successful wildlife photographer. One of the key skills to hone I think is subject knowledge. Knowing how a bird or mammal will react in a given scenario can be the key to getting a great shot over a mediocre one. Whether its a Buzzard taking a big dump just before it takes flight or a Hare dropping its ears before it legs it there are so many traits and habits that animals portray. When the light is poor, dont despair and stay indoors, grab your gear and get out and shoot some video. The light doesnt have to be as good to get some great species footage and the film you take can help build your species knowledge. No time in the field is wasted time!! As for the Topdon Thermal scope. I bought the exact same model 2 weeks ago and I'm loving it... Perfect for locating snall birds, that you can hear but not quite locate... even in brad daylight, the bird (or any other subject) stands out like a sore thumb... Was walking along a country lane and just thought I'd have a look around the woodland, from the lane.. Couldn't get into the woods as it's fenced off.. As I scanned across the woods, something really bright, showed up... No way could I see it with the naked eye, but when I checked it out with the 400-800 I could see a fallow deer, resting by a fallow oak tree.
Two excellent pieces if kit... Yes you can pay a couple of grand for a thermal scope, but the Topdon, while not cheap but much cheaper than the thermal scopes so many other youtubers will harp on about, was one of my best investments ever
