Hope you dug the video. Let me know if you guys relate to the hesitation that comes with erasing and how you deal with it.

Honestly seeing him erase constantly was very humanizing in a sense. Even the greats have to figure things out or rework stuff they've already put down.

I think helps that Jim uses a unsharpened blunt lead in a lead holder do gesture drawing and loose layouts and then refines with a mechanical pencil from there. ..or just goes straight to the inks which is the part that's still sorcery to me. 😂

I never had this problem, but seeing people in the comments talk about their perspective with this problem makes me feel better about the fact there are things I am struggling with.

Erasure is just establishing fresh negative space. It is no less creative than anyother step.

Facts! Erasing is a necessary part of the process. Glad I was taught this a long time ago!

This is really potent instruction. Thank you.

I really like how a lot of people, including myself, take reference to comics when they want to draw manga due to the similarities and mindsets

This is indeed the main lesson I took away from these Jim Lee livestreams I used to watch all the time.
If something bugs you about your drawing (even just a little) don‘t be precious about it or think “man, this took so long!”. Just erase it. Sounds simple, but it isn’t in practice 😅

I've been an ink only artist for so many years I've recently got back into pencil and eraser it blew my mind. It feel great that you can further secure a solid piece of art.

This is a valuable skill no matter what medium you work in. I am a 3D game animator, and sometimes I am deep into a second pass before realizing that while a section looks good, it does not fit the game’s needs. I have learned to accept that I may need to scrap it and start over. The same thing happens when roughing out timing and poses, finally liking it, then losing the file to a crash. Either way, it takes a bit of fearlessness to keep going.

It’s wild how much better my art has gotten since I started erasing things and using white acrylic ink to make corrections. I seriously didn’t really do it much before and I’ve been drawing my entire life. I’m fifty. 😂

Good video,Joe.Cuz this has been one of my fears of drawing.Cuz you spend so much time on a specific drawing.Only to find out it's in a wrong position is very hard for me to erase the whole thing.But I get it now.

Fantastic video!!! The Eraser is your friend!

I really appreciated your insight here, Joe! Really well taught!

Thanks so much for this.I found literally burning faulty art frees me to start again.A personal psychological trick

@krnozine 9 months ago

Agree. I watched a lot of his videos from comic cons and seeing him make mistakes and admitting it freely made me feel less pressured and enjoy doing art more...and he even once asked the fans to check if he did harley quinn right. Glad to find this video it helped as a reminder. Yup that feeling of having to erase all the hardwork or putting it on the waste bin after looking at it again 😂 I sometimes just go like... ok lesson learned.

when Jim Lee being Jim Lee!!

@Husain5XG 9 months ago

I didn't learned this lesson from Jim lee but from a video by oneyplay on their "Sightly Artistic" videos, mainly the first one where they just draw it and then erase the whole thing to draw something else, never saving the older one because it's recorded in a video anyway, and also they were doing it for fun, and people should think of that too.

@vaushfan9200 2 months ago

It's actually crazy how much he erases. I found his streams and he'll draw a whole figure that looks awesome and then just erase the whole thing and redraw it in a better pose or whatever
